Chris Carmichael - San Diego Radio Net
Some morning radio show host I won't repeat here read an email from a listener Bob who called the morning show part of corporate radio and linked them to 1930s Germany ... for his stance on the words of a "B-star" actress. The host called the writer and after a few moments of mumblings by Bob ... he hung up. Corporate radio exists on every front, the radio host said. The morning so-called king also said that Vice President Mike Glickenhaus is not in the studio in the morning telling him and his crew what to day ... and the radio host said that they don't know what they are going to do in the next five mintues, let alone the next hour. That's the beauty of a live, locally produced, and talented show. It's scripted and polished during the broadcast hours ... [John Boy and Billy successfully do that every morning on their syndicated radio show, a funny show that's not heard in San Diego (sorry, Chris and whatever-ards, but better radio talent exists outside the Outland.)]

A friendly nudge to the editor of this website: new news commentaries and stories have been posted at davesfunstuff.com, the mother davesfunstuff News page, for months now. Stories will be archived to pay soon, so please read when you can. The external links on the third column below the Datebooks have many relevant news stories I grouped together for your easy convieience.

10/4.4/02 - "The Countdown's On for Internet Radio. Internet radio is at a crossroads. On October 20th thousands of Internet radio stations are scheduled to begin paying royalty fees on songs they play and all the ones they have played in the last roughly three years." John Maffei - North County Times TV/Sports
Chargers may land on MNF...if Oakland is in the World Series, that is. Maffei explains how.

Me Like Hockey! + ESPN and ESPN2 open the NHL season with a pair of games Wednesday. Gary Thorne and Bill Clement will return as the cable network's top announcing team. Steve Levy and Darren Pang are the No. 2 team. Recently retired NHL star Ray Ferraro joins the "NHL 2Night" show.
+ Fox Sports Net will carry the L.A. Kings' season opener Wednesday. The game against Phoenix will be preceded by a ceremony honoring Wayne Gretzky, whose No. 99 will be retired by the Kings. The telecast begins at 6:30 p.m. Gretzky and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman are also scheduled to drop by the announcers' booth during the game.
+ XTRA Radio (690) has dropped the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
+ Channel 4 San Diego announced it will carry 12 San Diego Gulls games this season, starting Oct. 12.

North County Times - Randy Dotinga
Arbitron May Become Meter Maid.

Also: Crunch time has come for KFMB-AM, which has doubled its ratings during its coverage of the Westerfield trial. Can it keep up the pace? If KFMB-AM is smart, it will hire a San Diego-based talk-show host to give competitor KOGO a run for its money when that station airs Rush Limbaugh and Dr. Laura, who are about as local as a botched Florida election. ... Mike Halloran is out as program director at North County alternative-rock station Premium 92.1. Halloran was the prime mover behind the station, which offers cutting-edge rock for listeners who think 91X is too conservative. He also hosted a show each weekday afternoon. Details of his departure weren't available as of this column's deadline.

Jay Posner - TV/Radio Sports - The San Diego Union
Padres Losing Viewers as Well as Games. Posner explains how. Also...

Me Still Like Hockey! As mentioned earlier, the NHL season begins Wednesday; ESPN starts with Stars-Avalanche at 5 p.m. If Disney's coverage isn't enough, "NHL Center Ice" again will offer up to 40 games a week for $139 ($159 after Oct. 15) on digital cable, DirecTV and Dish Network. A free preview will air Oct. 9-15.

Me Like Baseball! Thanks to ESPN Radio 800, local baseball fans were able to hear something unusual this week - live division series playoff games. While XTRA was carrying its regular talk shows, including three hours of Rome on tape, the new station was airing real games. Imagine that. ESPN 800 has two more games today before XTRA gets into the act tomorrow. Finally.

L.A., CA
Here's a good one he lists. 10/4.1/02 - "Firm Skirts Radio Caps in San Diego. Federal regulations prohibit any broadcaster from owning more than eight radio stations in a single market. But here along California's southern border, industry giant Clear Channel Communications Inc. has figured out a way around the rules--and that has left its smaller competitors fuming. By cutting deals to take over programming of five Mexican stations, including two in May, Clear Channel has grabbed nearly 50% of the San Diego market's radio advertising dollars..." Baseball Playoffs on Local Radio? (October 2, 2002)

UPDATE: ESPN Radio 800 is carrying the early round games. No word if Clear Channel's 690 or other stations is carrying the World Series. You could try picking up ESPN Radio 1110 if youre North enough to get the weak Southward signal and listen to some of the games there. KLAC 570 will have the Angels games. KTAR 620 out of Phoenix has the Diamondback games, but you can get it only at night. Last year, Santa Barbara's KIST 1340 AM carried the playoffs, but the signal is audible only in daytime hours.

Debates on Hedgecock Daily (September 30, 2002)

From FLASHFAX: THE 2002 HEDGECOCK DEBATES commence today. The first in a series of face offs that will continue thru November 5th. Today the 78th State Assembly race: Shirley Horton and Vince Hall. The question comes up that since we obviously are mostly Republican and Conservative can we present objective and unbiased debates. Here we have to stand on the record. ROGER has been moderating live on the radio, free air time debates for decades. Tough questions that are not asked anywhere else, yes!! No bullpoop allowed, yep!! Positions have to stand up to expert inquiry, of course. But ultimately we make sure that each candidate or issue expert has equal opportunity to state the case for public employment or a vote for or against a proposition.

OVER THE YEARS we have learned that candidates who are committed to cause and respect the voter are willing to engage in debate. Those who have no verbal skills or who parrot a party line without dedication tend to evade debate. That may serve a party, it does not serve us. Anywho let the debates begin. We always find the discussions fascinating even when we can't vote in a particular contest. We need to revive oratory as an art form.

NOT TOO OBVIOUS.tuned to KGTV last eve and caught the end of the local newscast.where GM Darrell Brown does this "talk back to 10" or something. He reads e-mails. This segment had to do with San Diego's plot to reinstate the Red Light Scameras. He read one e-mail blasting red light runners and heralding the scameras.then another one with the same point of view.and then that was it. Huh? Why didn't he just come out and do an editorial rather than foist his opinion off on e-mailers. Nobody who got took by the 271 buck a pop scam wrote in? Fortunately we avoid local TV so we don't get exposed too much.

    Access.com: Halloran Fired (September 30, 2002)

All Access reports (thanks to some posters on the Los Angeles radio forum) that Mike Halloran, PD of KFSD/San Diego and Cool 94.3/Anaheim is out. The poster on the board asks "Anyone know why? Is it health related? I recall he had a heart attack several months ago."

Says the poster, "I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Halloran's stations, beginning with 95.7 and especially 92-Five/San Diego. I only heard a bit of his work at Y-107/LA and that AM 1510 which lead up to KFSD and Cool. Anyway, I hope he is okay."

Says another poster, "They also let Randy Dewitt go...He was APD & Afternoons."

    News From sdradio.net (September 30, 2002)

Tom McManus, KPBS-FM's first full-time employee, has died. He was 71. Tom helped bring the station to air, and started to work there in 1968. He helped to take the station from a five-hour day operation to a full-time, full-power NPR station. ....

Weekend warrior Jeff Isaac, heard on KFMB-AM 760 shares fun stories ... and lawyer jokes during his weekend show. Here's a gem: "How many lawyer jokes are there?"-- Only three. The rest are true stories..." Check the 760KFMB radio schedule for the times ....

The San Diego AIR Awards are coming to the market. The March of Dimes media awards is an annual recognition for media.
