Summer 2002 Evalutrons: Corporate Radio Continues To Sag (Sep 2002)It's been a summer of ho-hums and yawns as commercial radio has sunk to a new collective ratings low, in sharp contrast to what the summer Arbitrons have published yesterday at rronline.com"Cheap" Channel may have gained two more stations with the recent LMA of two Mexico stations, but their gutting of "Sleep-eZe" 90 and "Boob" 99.3 have driven both of them completetly off the radar as they each earned their worst ratings ever in the Evalutrons. "SleepeZe 90" earned a paltry 0.07 rating while "Boob" 99.3 sunk to a disappointing 0.11. Last spring, "90" earned a 0.23 (down from a pre-"Cheap" Channel 4.6 in the Winter book) and "Hot Country" 99.3, the predecessor of "Boob", got an already weak 0.7 in the Winter before sinking to 0.41 in the Spring. In the gutter, the bottom 20 (we increased it from 10 since last spring) goes like this: -1. (the worst) K-G-Bore 101.5 -0.01, meaning that their rating is so damn low that it's the first time we somehow managed to award the radio station a negative rating. It was the 0.01 point penalty the station earned for firing Jim McInnes last week that was tagged on at the last minute by the officials at Evalutronics Incorporated, which surveys the radio stations. -2. (the second worst) "KOOK" 95.7 (or "Fool" 95.7), whichever it is, earned a 0.02 for being the worst produced oldies format in the history of the San Diego Outland. And no, KOOK is not a typo! -3. (the third worst) is "sleepeZe 90.3" 0.07 for giving the Outland nothing but a bland diet of hip hop, R&B, and rap. All in all, "Cheap" Channel programs music that's mostly forgettable for people who happen to have a brain. -4. (the fourth worst) is "Boob" 99.3 0.11 for cloning the better-programmed veteran KSON-FM. -5. (the fifth worst) is KMYI "Why" 94.1 0.17 (down from 0.92) for a bland alternative to Star 100.7 -6. (the sixth worst) is KPLN "The Plain Nut" 103.7 with a 0.19 (up from 0.01 last Spring), but their period-piece narrowly-focused genre doesn't hit it off with the masses. -7. (the seventh worst) is KHTS (or KsH*Ts) ("Cheap Channel 93.3") with a 0.22 (down from 1.5), while their idea of Top 40 continues to lull San Diego into a deep sleep. Most people can't tell the difference between 90 and 93 anymore -8. (the eighth worst) is Magic 92.5 0.27 (down from 3.1); like KGB, this period piece format has gotten very boring with a narrow focus on old R&B dance and a small playlist, only without the obnoxious KGB guy. -9. (the ninth worst) is KOGO 600 0.38 (down from 2.5) for its boring obsession with the Westerfield trial. -10. (the tenth worst) is "Bore" 94.9 0.41 (down from 0.58) as its decade period-piece narrow genre format continues to bore and dull. The rest of the worst from -11. to -20.: "K-POOP" 1360 0.44 (0.51), "K-FLY" 640 0.45 (0.46), KSDO 1130 0.49 (0.38), XTRA 690 0.54 (0.42), KFMB-AM 760 0.65 (3.0, another station too absorbed into Westfield), "91-suX" 91.1 0.66 (2.1), KIOZ-FM 105.3 0.69 (1.9), KIIS-FM 102.7 0.72 (1.6, its lowest rating ever even for a Los Angeles FM station), "Radio Dismal" 1240 0.76 (1.2), and "De-Powered 106" 105.9 0.81 (1.47) DFSX Is #1!The winner of the Summer Evalutron member is William Lofton, who receives a free Larry Weaver CD. And, no, the nitwits at Clear Channel are ineligible to vote. We caught a few that attempted to get in on the mailing list and were found out, arrested, and forced to watch endless reruns of The Golden Girls on Lifetime as capital punishment! |
