Radio Wires (September 25, 2002)RANDY DOTINGA For the North County Times:... Last week, this column gave out the twice-yearly Static Column Awards for Radio (also know as the SCARs). North County's trophy shops were on call, but none of the winners demanded a statuette, a plaque or even a poorly designed award certificate printed on an ancient Epson dot-matrix. But it turns out there are even more winners, and even more chances for them to ignore their awards. In the tradition of "deleted scenes" on movie DVDs, the leftover SCARS go to: KOGO and its sister Clear Channel stations, who get the "Swept Away" award for letting themselves get overtaken by good intentions. Last Sunday, Clear Channel radio personalities teamed up with the parents of Danielle van Dam to remember her birthday and promote child safety at a big community event in Sabre Springs. It's a worthy cause, but don't these grieving parents deserve some peace and not another public appearance, even if they agreed to it? TV Wires (September 26, 2002)Letter: Where has quality television gone?I have a beef about the scarcity of great entertainment on television. I have access to 62 channels. Counting the hours from 7 to 11 p.m., multiplied by 62 channels, that equals 248 hours of evening television programming. That's 248 hours, folks. And you know what? Some evenings I'm pressed to find anything worth watching. Unless a program doesn't show someone having their brains blown out, a girl being raped or some moronic sit-com, then it doesn't rate airtime. I guess this catalog of bad taste is based on ratings, which, in turn, ties into viewer response. God help us. Whatever happened to the taped shows of Sinatra, Streisand, Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, Hollywood Palace, etc? There was true entertainment with a commodity rarely seen today ---- true talent. Network producers or celebrity estate custodians, if you are hoarding these tapes in some dusty enclave, you should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. JOHN LLEWELLYN Oceanside
Radio Wires (September 23, 2002)Don Barrett - Los Angeles Radio PeopleSpanish Sports: A reader recently wrote about sports ratings in afternoon drive: "Info supplied by Greg Ashlock (Clear Channel) is not correct. Lee Hamilton does not own afternoon drive sports. "Radio Unica/KBLA 1580 sports show has bigger total market numbers. Based on total market ratings, (not Hispanic weighted) for Men, 18-49, 5-8 p.m.: KBLA has a 0.4 rating, KMPC, 0.0; KSPN, 0.1; KXTA, .2; XTRA, .2 For men 25-54, 4-8 p.m.: KBLA has 0.5; KMPC, 0.0; KSPN, 0.2; KXTA, 0.2; XTRA, 0.2. (har har har!) "Our afternoon drive sports show is hosted by Hispanic sports broadcasting legend Jorge Ramos from Miami with Samuel Jacobo (who is also on Fox Sports Americas) and Alvaro Riet from Los Angeles. "There are also several other contributors throughout the week. All of the other stations have sports all day. We don't. We only have it from 4 p.m.-8 p.m., yet we beat them. I'm sure Mr. Ashlock meant no disrespect towards us. Just thought I would correct it." - Tony Siracusa, national manager, Radio Unica, Southern California. |
