Radio Wires (September 12, 2002)North County Times - Randy DotingaThis just in from the Follow the Bouncing Bauer department: Joe Bauer is out as host of the morning show on golden oldies station KPOP. He got sacked last week and was replaced by Harry "Happy Hare" Martin, who's been hosting a weekend show for several years and was one of San Diego's top radio personalities in the 1960s and 1970s. The new show will bring the station back to its music-oriented roots, said local Clear Channel Vice President Mike Glickenhaus. Bauer is best known as the longtime co-host of "Hudson & Bauer," KFMB-AM's former morning show, with the late Mac Hudson. Bauer ended up at KPOP in the spring of 2001. While he had a dedicated fan base, many listeners complained that he talked too much. In other changes, KPOP is dumping much of its pre-taped content and reuniting the local radio duo of Cynthia Heath-Kerrigan and Ken Copper. They'll host a show from 2-6 p.m. ... Speaking of golden oldies, North County station KCEO has dumped its talk format from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., and is now airing the greatest hits of the '30s, '40s and '50s, just like its former sister station, the defunct KPSA. Los Angeles classical station KUSC announced last week that 90.7 FM, a Tijuana-based station, will become its newest affiliate. As soon as later this month, XLNC1/90.7 FM will dump its disc-jockey-less classical format and simulcast KUSC's broadcast from 6 p.m.-6 a.m. KUSC, based at the University of Southern California, currently has satellite stations in Palm Springs, Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara. Listeners can already hear KUSC in some parts of North County by tuning in to its Los Angeles frequency at 91.5 FM. KUSC, which has 30,000 members, emphasizes variety (its playlist includes both medieval and 21st-century pieces) and education. "We give information about the music," said Brenda Barnes, president and general manager. KUSC will definitely be an improvement on XLNC1, which tries to reach a binational audience by never telling you ---- in either Spanish or English ---- the names of the pieces it plays. If listeners really want Muzak by Mozart, they should just buy a few CDs. Meanwhile, classical music fans can still get their fill of Beethoven and Brahms on KPBS-FM at night and on North County's KFSD-AM all day long. Several readers called or e-mailed to say they can't find the radio column on the redesigned ocregister.com Web site. Those in the know are working to make it more user-friendly, but for now, it should be accessible Sundays. If you miss it, click the "Browse Days" link under the Search window and click on Sunday's date to see the site as it appeared that day. STATION BREAKS... Sinbad returned to KHHT/92.3 FM this weekend with "Sinbad's Psychedelic Shack," a show billed as a collection of his favorite music. It airs at 8 a.m. Saturday. Rich Marotta replaces Arnie Spanier 3-7 p.m. weekdays starting Monday on KXTA/1150 AM. Spanier's off to Atlanta KRLA/870 AM and sister station KKLA/99.5 FM will operate out of a vintage radio studio in its booth (Building 4, booth 4336) at the L.A. County Fair in Pomona. "The GMX Network Computer & Tech Show" will air live there today, noon-1 p.m. The fair opened Friday and runs through Sept. 29 at the Fairplex. WEB CHAT Here's what local personalities are saying and doing on Don Barrett's laradio.com Web site: Returns: A few weeks ago Bob Shannon began a new talk show about film and TV acting, which aired Tuesdays at midnight on KRLA. "The immediate response to the show was so positive that KRLA execs have moved it to Saturday evenings from 6-7 p.m., e-mailed Shannon. The new host will be R.J. Adams, whose "years" as an actor and director will lend more to the show. But in reality, Adams and Shannon are one in the same. "It's tough. After almost 40 years of doing radio as Bob Shannon, I feel that I'm losing a part of myself. But all my acting history, which spans the past 25 years, has the credibility in the industry to do a show like this. I just have to remember when I turn the microphone on which guy is which." As R.J., he has appeared in over 100 episodic TV shows including a regular role on "Riptide." He also was seen in "Hill Street Blues," "Murder She Wrote" and "Rocky IV." Moving: Over last weekend, KCBS-FM "Arrow 93" made the move to the Venice Boulevard facility that houses KROQ and KRTH. (KRTH is moving to Melrose in a month or so.) "We're being made very comfortable and feel at home with the staffs of KROQ and KRTH," said "Arrow" program director Tommy Edwards. "The engineering and information staff here is incredible!" Tragedy: A 21-year-old woman outside KIIS/102.7 FM where 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake was making an appearance was killed by a drunken driver who plowed into a crowd of fans, according to a police report. The driver faces charges of vehicular homicide, hit-and-run and driving under the influence and is being held on $1 million bail. Radio Bitz and Bytes (September 10, 2002)91X is now doing 91 minutes of music commercial free every day starting at 9:10am, just as the last of the morning commuters have clocked in to work. Fortunately for me, I commute to work between 9:30 and 10:30am.Star 100.7 presented a way cool party mix of 80's and 90's dance hits over the Labor Day weekend through September 2nd. The segment got so many positive calls that Star has brought back the dance hits weekdays at 5-5:15pm as well as Friday evenings. Many songs the late Q106 and the old XHRM 92.5 of the 80's made famous such as Cathy Dennis (feels good to hear her old songs again), Arrested Development, Bel Biv and Devoe (whatever happened to this band from the New Jack Swing days?), and hundreds of more one-hit wonders parade the feature on Star. This past Thursday, Sets, oops, I mean, KPRI Authentic Rock(sm) brought back an old feature during its Sets days: Three-For-Thursdays as it explores the deep tracks. KPRI has moved their Fresh Music feature from Fridays to Mondays over the past summer. KPRI's New Noize at 9 airs Mondays at 9 (not 8 central time)! Zeb Navarro, host of Oldies and Oddities on Comet AM 1320 in Oceanside, has returned to host some new editions of Oldies and Oddities this fall. More on that later, he promises. Well, 92.1, what's taking you so long to get the show back on your puny little 588 watt stick? A couple of letters giving thumbs down to Rick Roberts' obsessive disorder on pursuing child molesters for an inordinate amount of airtime, and it has turned off one letter writer to the point of deprogramming KFMB 760 and KFMB TV8 from their presets and switching to KCST cable 3..., oops, I mean KNSD 7/39 for news. What's with these blasts from the past lately? Speaking of the old KCST cable 3 days, did anyone notice that up through the early 70's when 39 didn't sign on until late in the day, and if you had Mission Cable, you could tune in cable 3 and hear the audio of KEYT channel 3 out of Santa Barbara? Now, with a channel 3 out of Tijuana blasting through the lower half of San Diego county, you could get KEYT only in places where the TJ signal is blocked and you have a clear shot to Santa Barbara.
