Veteran air talent Jojo "Cookin'" Kincaid joins Infinity's Oldies KRTH (K-Earth 101)/Los Angeles for the 1-4pm shift. Kincaid was most recently with KPLN/San Diego. As part of the changes, Jim Carson, who recently moved from mornings to Kincaid's new slot, will now hold the 10am-1pm shift. Brian Beirne - a.k.a. "Mr. Rock 'N' Roll" - relocates from Carson's new shift to 7-10pm as Christina Kelley moves to 10pm-1am. Radio Wires (July 20, 2002)Jay Posner - TV/Radio Sports - The San Diego UnionGO>>> Posner on ESPN Radio 800... It's too early to make any judgments about the new ESPN Radio 800, especially since one of ESPN's top personalities, Tony Kornheiser , is serving a one-week suspension for saying nasty things about ESPN management. But after hearing the weak afternoon programming, we will say this: The sooner a local show can get on the air, the better. Speaking of local knowledge, let's hope whoever the new station hires will be more familiar with San Diego history than XTRA's Scott Kaplan, who concluded an interview with Point Loma High legend Don Larsen yesterday by saying, "I didn't know he was from down here." Yikes.
Arbitrons: San Diego OK. So radio news has been slow lately. Sorry for the long gap between reports. Either nobody cares about radio or you have scoops and send them to some pay radio news site where nobody can read it. The quarterly Arbitrons are out and in just one year, KYXY, which wsa trailing KOGO by over two points, is just 0.2 from the top. KOGO, thanks to the losing Padres, tired Dr. Laura, and the ridiculous courtroom coverage we already have Court TV covering, lost almost a point. So it's interesting to note that the most listened to music station is not computer automated on a hard drive. Going down the list, smooth music KIFM 98.1 (I can't call it jazz since it plays too many other genres of music, kind of like the CBS Late Movie rerunning M*A*S*H and Columbo and calling it a movie) and the now CC-run Z90 are tied for fourth. Not much else of note, except that 91X is below a 4, thanks to KFSD 92.1's alternative to the pop alternative, My Mix 94.1 is gaining ground, Magic 92.5 sagged, KFMB-AM rose, and dinosaur rock KGB had a "Weird Al" quarterly rating..."2.7", only Weird Al is ten times better than KGB. Also interesting is KFI rose up while KOGO, both run by Clear Channel, sank, as people flipped from KOGO to KFI when that courtroom trial coverage was on KOGO. Automated oldies KOCL, which has basically no heritage except it once was a small Carlsbad radio station that played Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 back in 1987, isn't doing much better than the tired Planet FM. All 80's decade KBZT isn't getting anywhere either. Nobody's Listening to KGB?50,000 watts...all going to waste! Why? Overplaying of the same 150 classic rock songs everyday that nobody wishes to hear more than once a month. Is anyone listening to KGB when their morning team leaves? Chances are, KGB is doing worse than KPRI-FM during the music dayparts, thus, dragging down the ratings below a three. Who knows how low it is, since most everybody in its target demographic listens to KIFM, KSON, CDs full of classic rock KGB is NOT playing, or MP3s of Dr. Demento and other illegal radio show downloads like Howard Stern and such. Males, age 35-64, the single most important demographic to advertisers, is the most elusive to catch. I know. I'm one of them. They demand beefy programming concepts run by music fans, not wimpy voice-tracked reruns of KGB run by computer! Looks like a job opening at KGB's programming department. I doubt that there's a music director there, since KGB is rerunning the same airchecks all the time. Time for a whole new KGB! Time to get in some music experts from KPIG and KOZT to program KGB. Time to update the list, and restrict the classic rock to Sunday mornings. You see, classic rock is a specialty show, not a format. Nobody listens to 24 hours of a small playlist eight hours a day five days a week, dimwit KGB thinkers. Nobody goes to the KGB fireworks show and then sets a button to KGB after being exposed to the radio station plug. Nobody listens to KGB after Rickards and company sign off (reruns of the show at night don't count). Nobody takes a weekend off around KGB if all it plays are the same 150 songs every weekend. Nobody gives a buzz about KGB because nothing is happening there. Time for a whole new KGB! Here's how I would reprogram KGB if I was the boss (Clear Channel would have to draft me to work there!) MON-FRI: 4am-6am: DSC reruns for early risers; 6am-10am: DSC; 10am-NOON: Nothing but New Rock; NOON-1pm: Weekday Special; 1pm-3pm: Nothing but New Rock; 3pm-6pm: Drive Time with Jim McInnes, mixing 20 percent non-repeating classic rock with new rock; 6pm-7pm: 60's rock at 6; 7pm-8pm: 70's rock at 7; 8pm-MID: Rock and Roll Prime Time (rare cuts and other specials plus Rockline); MID-4am: classic rock albums played all the way through. SAT: 4am-6am: classic rock albums; 6am-8am: Dr. Demento (previous week); 8am-NOON: rock and roll countdown; NOON-9pm: live requests for new and classic rock and roll; 9pm-4am: Saturday Night Rocks (live rock concert cuts and party rock favorites and rarities). SUN: 4am-NOON: true progressive rock of the 60's and 70's; NOON-6pm: live requests; 6pm-10pm: rock specials; 10pm-MID: Dr. Demento (current week); MID-3am: best of King Biscuit and other old rock radio shows.
