Music Industry Unveils New Piracy-Proof Format: A Black, Plastic Disc With Grooves On It. Music bosses have unveiled a revolutionary new recording format that they hope will help win the war on illegal file sharing which is thought to be costing the industry millions of dollars in lost revenue. Nicknamed the 'Record', the new format takes the form of a black, vinyl disc measuring 12 inches in diameter, which must be played on a specially designed 'turntable'. "We can state with absolute certainty that no computer in the world can access the data on this disc," said spokesman Brett Campbell. "We are also confident that no one is going to be able to produce pirate copies in this format without going to a heck of a lot of trouble. This is without doubt the best anti-piracy invention the music industry has ever seen." "It's like, really big and stuff," said Doug Flamboise, one of the testers. "I couldn't get it into any of my drives. I mean, what format is it? Is it, like, from France or something?" In the new format, raw audio data in the form of music is encoded by physically etching grooves onto the vinyl disc. The sound is thus translated into variations on the disc's surface in a process that industry insiders are describing as 'completely revolutionary' and 'stunningly clever.' To decode the data stored on the disc, the listener must use a special player which contains a 'needle' that runs along the grooves on the record surface, reading the indentations and transforming the movements back into audio that can be fed through loudspeakers.

Salem's KFSH-FM, LA to unveil new broadcast studio.... The studio will have the Fish theme carried throughout with an aquarium motif. The main console area features seating for five, including on-air talent with mikes for their guests. The Fish studio is equipped to accommodate live on-air performances by musical groups. Plans are already in the works to bring in major Christian artists for live appearances as they tour Southern California. The unveiling will occur tomorrow with an open house audience of industry insiders and station sponsors. The building was designed and built by Salem LA Director of Engineering Mark Pallock and Chief Engineer Bill Sheets along with a team of engineers.

Clear Channel LA stations to launch LCD and LED screens on car radios.... Clear Channel's LA stations - KYSR-FM, KBIG-FM, KIIS-FM, KOST-FM and KHHT-FM will have display and targeted text broadcast displayed on car radios using dMarc Networks patent-pending dRDS (Dynamic Radio Data Service). The text messages displayed on these five radio stations will have artist information for participating artists while the music is aired. The text messages can be broadcast in static, paging and scrolling formats viewable on most car radio receivers. The messages can be based on targeting parameters that include station playlists, time of day and other data sets. For now the consumer will receive song and artist information, but the consumer will soon be able too obtain up-to-the-minute traffic, news, weather, stock reports and sports scores among other customized content.

Nicole Sandler Checks In (May 31, 2002)

Hi gang,

Well, you're the first group I'm inviting in! The new site is up and running... there will be a few minor changes but, for the most part, it's there.

http://www.virtualradioservices.com

There is a button called "Forum"... click on it and you'll find yourself at the "virtual radio lounge"... It's a really good message board program, and I'm thinking it might not be a bad thing to move this group off of yahoogroups and on to there.

As an incentive, I posted a very cool link that you'll have to go there to get...

I'm off to Austin early tomorrow morning to interview David Baerwald, (from David & David, and one of the powers behind the Tuesday Night Music Club).. who has a wonderful new album coming out in July... I'm doing an hour-long show for his label, Lost Highway... I'll post the finished product on the site too...

Nicole
