Fox and Simpsons Win the 2001-02 Season (May 13-22, 2002)

The final week of the 2001-02 season limped to an end as almost all of the TV series fell back to their low quality levels, while The Simpsons finished in #1 and tie #3 positions to win the season, beating second place "Sabrina", and helping to propel the Fox Television Network to its #1 position as the most watched television network of the year in prime time.

While almost any rerun or clip show featuring shows from year's past would beat most any show in the 90's and 100's, as demonstrated by reunions of Carol Burnett Show, M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore, Cosby Show, and even That's Incredible (reunions of Dallas and Eight is Enough years earlier also beat the other shows in a weekly contest), there are a precious few sitcoms worth watching that could still beat most of the other substandard sitcom fare out today.

TV reunions of "Sabrina" and "That 70's Show" may not beat any reunion special of the shows from up through the 70's, but in a time where the season opened up with terrorist attacks on the East coast, comfort shows such as these and others provided much relief from dealing with Osama and other villians and taking our minds off of them temporarily while the nation healed to sitcoms, variety shows, game shows, and comedy talk shows.

In this extended week's shortened ranking (due to the tie rules for duplicating shows, there were only nine unique series to rank), some low-ranked sitcoms such as "According to Jim" rose up in ranks as many other series ended their runs before Week 33 of the season started.

The Simpsons needed at least 14 points in its final week in order to beat Sabrina for second place. It got 18. Watching the reunion clip shows from M*A*S*H and Cosby Show just shows me how much I miss the good old days when television had wittier writers who could write comedy for thinking persons. Among the animated sitcoms, only Simpsons, King of the Hill, South Park, and Futurama provide humor and wit on the same intellectual level as Rocky and Bullwinkle, Yogi Bear, and The Flintstones, the cartoon sitcoms from the 60's.

Among the non-animated sitcoms, only Sabrina, Drew Carey, and Malcolm in the Middle would be among the "B" level pleasures on the same level as Laverne and Shirley, Bewitched, and Night Court, to name just three of the most entertaining if not wittiest comedies of all time.

The "A" level comedies are almost non-existant, and if there are, where are they? Most of the sitcoms of the past season, such as That 70's Show, Titus, Greg the Bunny, and Maybe It's Me, fail to generate consistent quality levels in writing and wit, and fall into the dreaded "C" level, which is nowadays a very crowded pool of the likes of other barely-watchable sitcoms such as Everybody Loves Raymond, Will and Grace, Dharma and Greg, Spin City, Friends, and Frasier. These "C" level sitcoms are so demographic specific, catering to either the chick crowd, the rich crowd, or the 18-49 crowd, that none of them have the quality levels to survive if they were programmed in the 70's when most of the better sitcoms would easily wipe them clean off the air. Remember "Bridget Loves Bernie?" "All's Fair?" "Just Friends?" "Hot L Baltimore?" None of these bad sitcoms are any better than most of the "C"-level sitcoms out today.

The "A" level comedies of the past include such memorable shows (I will make up a poll later) such as my all time favorites, All in the Family, M*A*S*H, The Odd Couple, WKRP in Cincinnatti, The Cosny Show, and I Love Lucy to name six. All have several things in common: memorable and likable characters (even the bigoted Bunker had a lot of wit and charm), top writing teams, and the chance that you may accidentally learn something worthwhile from them to apply in real life.

Which brings us back to this now-concluded season as many of today's sitcoms are virtually competeting against themselves for the "C"-level poll, or cesspool as some critics like to call it.

This week's ratings are first, followed, by the final standings, and the ratings for the networks averaged from the series that were seen at least ten times this past season.

Sabrina Self-Destructs (also literally) (updated May 13, 2002)

NOTE: scroll down for updated Season-To-Date rankings after 32 weeks (ending May 12)!

The sixth season finale of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" on May 10 where Sabrina turns into stone and breaks up has apparently not fared well with reviewers participating in the DTV ratings system.

The cliff-hanger, which is nowhere near the class of "Who Shot J.R." in 1980, has apparently self-destructed in quality as the episode got an average rating of "F" from the viewers in this year's secret poll.

"What the heck is this," says one DTV diary keeper who shall remain anonymous. "If this is a cliff-hanger for next season, then I'm living in Pam Ewing's dream," referring to one season of Dallas being an entire dream after Bobby Ewing was killed at the end of one season and at the end of the next, Pam wakes up hearing Bobby showering.

"Did Sabrina cast a spell on herself or something," says another diary keeper. "The series was doing fine, but the last few weeks have tanked."

Blame it on sweeps weeks where the networks are rolling out the best of the series episodes in the May ratings weeks. Either shows like "Malcolm in the Middle" are better by comparison this month, or "Sabrina" has just losing her magical powers to keep up the ratings.

The season ratings for the top three shows (updated for 32 weeks)

 151 21 7.19 Simpsons * (2 shows left)
                      (worst = 6.57 / best = 7.43)
                      (NEEDS 12 POINTS TO WIN)
155 22 7.05 Sabrina the Teenage Witch (FINAL STANDING)
                      CLINCHED AT LEAST SECOND PLACE
 134 20 6.70 NBC's Saturday Night Live (1 show left!)
                      (worst = 6.38/ best = 6.86)
                      CLINCHED AT LEAST THIRD PLACE
"Sabrina" got zero points, ranked 13th for Week 32, apparently giving "The Simpsons" a reprieve and a clear chance to take the 2001-02 season title. The #1 win, worth 10 points, vaulted the show back into first place.

Says ratings analyst Joe Madden, "Sabrina" kept on loosing the ball and giving the other team a chance to score, which themselves kept on fumbled and threw interceptions to the other team, but now that "The Simpsons" has apparently regrouped, they have three shots to take the season title, but they must get a total of 12 points in its final week since Sabrina goose-egged for its season finale (the last week will count as a 10-day week) in order to bring up their season average above "Sabrina" to win.

Says ratings commentator Paul Summerall, "Simpsons" and Fox have taken a penalty earlier this season when Fox pulled their show in favor of the stupid "Chair" one Sunday night, not enough in advance for TV Guide to make any adjustments as many people taped what they thought was "The Simpsons" and "Malcolm" when they got that stupid "Chair" series, making them waste their electricity on a show they don't care to watch, which is why Fox and the show got the "zero Point" penalty that stretched the series to 23 instead of 22. "Simpsons" also had some rough episodes during the off-sweeps weeks, but Fox has apparently saved the top three guns for this month and Fox will be sure to avenge and overcome the penalty and give the "Simpsons" the win.

Says oddsmaker Jerry "The Freak" Snyder, "The odds of Sabrina winning the title are slim to none at this point. Simpsons are a guaranteed shoo-in as long as they do not goose-egg in any week. Next week's show load is much lighter with only seven series competeting, so "Simpsons" cannot get lower than four points for the last two episodes in the final week, but they must average over eight points for a sure win, no ifs, ands, or buts."

Says play-by-play man Burnt Mustburger, "Sabrina had the ball in their court, but the air in it leaked out, but at least as a consolation, they still have beaten Saturday Night Live for second place. SNL could have won the season if those funny Smigel cartoons were on every week and they actually had funnier skits."

D.T.V. Ratings Week 22

The rankings go from 10 to 1 in steps of one.

The battle between The Simpsons and Sabrina are on hiatus since both shows are in reruns. thus giving the other shows a chance to get 8, 9, and 10 points to raise their averages.

Several newcomers were added to pad up the TV show count. Friends, Will and Grace, and Just Shoot Me were watched due to the fact that ABC 10 in San Diego pre-empted the shows I usually watch and freeing up a slot to do other things.

For week 22 airing from Feb 25 - Mar 3, the rankings go...

1. Malcolm in the Middle (10 points)
2. Saturday Night Live (9 points)
3. The Job (8 points)
4. MAD TV (7 points)
5. Drew Carey Show (6 points)
6. Will and Grace (5 points)
7. Futurama (4 points)
8. That 70's Show (3 points)
9. Just Shoot Me (2 points)
10. Watching Ellie (1 point) (kind of dragged on through the show, though Julia is cute!)
11. Friends (0 points)
12. My Wife and Kids (0 points) (low-blow penalty mostly assures it at bottom spot of the week!)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 19

This week is a ten show week since we have a full slate this week.

The rankings go from 10 to 1 in steps of one.

Getting penalized this time is "Bernie Mac Show", for its "below the belt" scene last week. Fox has been penalized three times for "below the belt" scenes to get a cheap laugh at the expense of a man's sensitive area.

Sabrina didn't air this week, but gained the lead in the season rankings over "The Simpsons" when it lost to seven shows ahead of it. Talk about quirks in the system!

For week 19 airing from Feb 4 - 10, the rankings go...

1. Futurama (10 points) (gained a full point in the rakings!)
2. Malcolm in the Middle (9 points) (up 1/2 point!)
3. Titus (8 points) (back above a "1"!)
4. King of the Hill (7 points)
5. Drew Carey (6 points)
6. Charmed (5 points)
7. The Job (4 points)
8. The Simpsons (3 points)
9. That 70's Show (8pm) (2 points)
10. Bernie Mac (1 points) (after 5-rank penalty for low blow)
11. My Wife and Kids (8-8:30pm) (0 points)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 18

This week is a ten show week since we have a full slate this week.

The rankings go from 10 to 1 in steps of one.

Getting penalized again is "Malcolm in the Middle," with anohter "below the belt" scene. Part two of "Malcolm" would have made it to fourth place without the penalty assesment.

Neither the much hyped "Malcolm" or the much ballyhooed Britney on "SNL" could beat four witches and angels for the week (Chachi MADE ME watch TBAA!) He's a much bigger fan of Valerie B than me.

No Simpsons airing this week meant that this was anyone's week.

For week 18 airing from Jan 28 - Feb 3, the rankings go...

1. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (10 points)
2. Touched by an Angel (Sat 8pm) (9 points)
3. Charmed (8 points)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 17

This week is a ten show week since we have a full slate this week.

The rankings go from 10 to 1 in steps of one.

This week, ABC gets penalized, again, too for bumping the scheduled "Spin City" as listed in TV Guide for its inane new game show "The Chamber," and Spin City will get another zero to penalize ABC for its moronic change in schedule on too short notice.

Also getting penalized again is "Malcolm in the Middle," which DID air as scheduled, but gets penalized in quality points for hitting below the belt, the same penality that "King of The Hill" did earlier this season. Why are so many writers in the sitcoms watching to many "America's Funniest Home Videos" reruns where some poor guy gets something thrown in the spot where it really hurts the most?

For week 17 airing from Jan 21 - 27 (Monthly Weird Al Day), the rankings go...

1. Simpsons (10 points) #22
2. Charmed (9 points) #93
3. The Job (8 points) #75
4. Sabrina (7 points) #105
5. Malcolm in the Middle #28 (would have won the week if they didn't go for the low blow) (6 points)
6. Titus (5 points) #60
7. Drew Carey (4 points) #62
8. Bernie Mac (3 points) #47
9. Reba (2 points) #100
10. That 70's Show (1 point) #48
11. Family Guy (0 points) #89
12. That 80's Show (0 points) #42
13. Raising Dad (0 points) #106
14. Spin City (0 points)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 16

This week is a five show week since there are so few qualifying shows to be rated.

The rankings go from 10 to 2 in steps of one.

This week, ABC gets penalized too for bumping some shows for another series, "The Chamber," which is not listed in TV Guide, and Spin City will get a zero.

Other than interuptions by news and sports, any other series changes being bumped by another series not seen in TV Guide's listings will also be given zeros. The only other exception are music tributes to the September 11th tragedy or whatever such as the one that bumped off the season premiere of "Sabrina" twice off the WB schedule.

For week 16 airing from Jan 14 - 20, the rankings go...

1. The Simpsons (10 points)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 15

This week is a five show week since there are so few qualifying shows to be rated.

The rankings go from 10 to 2 in steps of one.

DTV ratings continue with some penalties imposed on the Fox network for their unannounced Sunday stunt of substituting the awful new "Chamber" series in place of their usual popular Simpsons/Malcolm in the Middle pair at 8pm. Fox also reran two Simpsons episodes in the 7-8pm hour. Neither change was made in time to be seen in TV Guide, so people who wanted to watch what they wanted to watch couldn't watch them at all. Instead, we get bullshit from Fox because of some asinine spat with the Disney dildos who also pulled a fast one on fans of Spin City and Dharma and Greg for premiering "The Chair", also unannounced in TV Guide.

Remember...if it's not in TV Guide, it doesn't exist. Therefore, since my VCR used up electricity to tape a show I did not want to watch, in this case "The Chamber", I will not only bill Fox-TV for reimbursement for electricity expenses, but to also penalize the network by giving the four shows affected by the change all zeroes.

Next week, ABC gets penalized too for bumping some shows for another series, and Spin City will get a zero.

Speaking of Sabrina...

For week 15 airing from Jan 7 - 13, the rankings go...

1. Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (10 points)
(Simpsons could have beaten it if it aired!)
2. Saturday Night Live (8 points)
3. Spin City (6 points) (will get zero in next week's survey)
4. That 70's Show (4 points)
5. Bernie Mac (2 points)
6. Titus (0 points)
7. King of the Hill (0 points) (penalty weighed against Fox-TV)
8. The Simpsons (0 points) (penalty weighed against Fox-TV)
9. Malcolm in the Middle (0 points) (penalty weighed against Fox-TV)
10. Futurama (0 points) (penalty weighed against Fox-TV)

Oddly enough, this is the first time Fox has swept the ratings cellar with all 7 at the bottom.

D.T.V. Ratings Week 7

This is the first week where we have a full lineup of shows I watch, except for Futurama, which isn't premiering any new shows until December 9.

Beginning this week, the list expands to Top 10 and points are awarded from #1 (10) to #10 (1) since by then we would have enough shows to reinstate the Top 10 list.

The week of Nov 5-12 has about 20 shows, only 12 of which are rankable (extra first run shows get same points as show ranked above it so that other shows get a fair shake in their hopes of getting a top ten ranking).

For week 7 airing from Nov 5-11, the rankings go...

 1. South Park (10 points)
 2. Simpsons Halloween (9 points) (28 or 33)
 3. Family Guy (8 points) (88)
 3. The Simpsons (tethered punishment) (TIE - 8 points) (28 or 33)

First off, instead of doing a Top Ten and awarding points in 1/2's, we'll just double the scores for the shows ranked so far, then award points in 1's. Sound better?

For the season after six weeks (through November 4, 2001)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 6

This is the last week where we have a 2/3rds of a regular lineup. Many of my favorites on Fox are premiering this week, so this is bad news for some TV shows that have gotten a free ride at the top for the past six weeks.

Beginning the week of Nov 5 through 11, the list expands to Top 10 and points are awarded from #1 (5) to #10 (0.5) since by then we would have enough shows to reinstate the Top 10 list.

The week of Oct 29-Nov 4 has only six regular series (four I don't watch every week) on the list, with the rest of the chart dominated by special sports programming.

For week 6 airing from Oct 29 through November 4, the rankings go...

x. World Series Game 7: D-Backs win series 4-3 (Nielsen Rank 1)
x. World Series Game 4: Yankees win, series tied 2-2 (Nielsen Rank 4)
x. World Series Game 5: Yankees win, lead series 3-2 (Nielsen Rank 7)
4. NBC Saturday Night Live (5 points)
x. World Series Game 3: Yankees win, trail series 2-1 (Nielsen Rank 5)
6. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (4 points) (Nielsen Rank 98)
x. Monday Night Football (Nielsen Rank 15)
x. World Series Game 6: Yankees win, tie series 3-3 (Nielsen Rank 9)
9. The Drew Carey Show (3 points) (Nielsen Rank 54)
10. Nikki (2 points) (Nielsen Rank 108)
11. Maybe It's Me (1 point) (Nielsen Rank 99)
12. Charmed (Nielsen Rank 88)
13. Bob Patterson (cancelled) (Nielsen Rank 63)
Among the regular non-sports series rankings, the highest on Nielsen's list comes in at a lousy, miserable, pathetic, embarrassing, 54th place (Drew Carey).

D.T.V. Ratings Week 5

The television ratings for the 2/3rds of the prime time shows that already premiered with new episodes are in with shows like The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, Titus, Family Guy, and King of The Hill having yet to premiere with new episodes. Fox comedies premiere next week!

Beginning the week of Nov 5 through 11, the list expands to Top 10 and points are awarded from #1 (5) to #10 (0.5) since by then we would have enough shows to reinstate the Top 10 list.

The week of Oct 29-Nov 4 will have only Drew, Patterson, Sabrina, Maybe, and Charmed qualifying for the week with Touched cancelled and not many other shows compatable and the rest still waiting to season premiere with new shows next week!

For week 5 airing from Oct 22 through 28, the rankings go...

1. NBC Saturday Night Live (5 points, compilation)
2. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (4 points) (still didn't hit #1, but look at the average for the year!)
x. That 70's Show (rerun, not counted)
3. Spin City (3 points)
4. Maybe It's Me (2 points)
5. The Drew Carey Show (1 point)
6. Charmed
7. Bob Patterson
-. Touched By An Angel (missed the show due to baseball, but it's "cancelled" due to low ratings)

D.T.V. Ratings Week 4

The television ratings for the 2/3rds of the prime time shows that already premiered with new episodes are in with shows like The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, and King of The Hill having yet to premiere with new episodes.

Reality series such as Monday Night Football and other sports, The Weakest Link, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and Whose Line Is It Anyway are not included in the rankings. We need more quality shows. Any reccomendations aside of N-B-Sucks? I'm waiting for Fox to premiere their shows after baseball.

1. Spin City (5 points)
2. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (4 points)
3. The Drew Carey Show (3 points)

0 1 0.00 Three Sisters (why is this a hit?)
  0 2 0.00 Maybe It's Me (gaining steam)
  0 0 ---- The Simpsons (once this show debuts, it's a consistent #1 performer)
0 0 ---- King of The Hill (performs well, giving Spin City and Sabrina a run for their money)
0 0 ---- Malcolm in the Middle (surprises)
0 0 ---- Futurama (what the heck. it runs)
0 0 ---- South Park (where are the first runs?)
