News Flashes (March 22, 2002)Edited by John McKimson. From Yahoo... ABC vows more 'traditional' fare ABC executives told media buyers this week that the third-place network had "lost its way" during the past few years and promised a return to its traditional programming style next season. Susan Lyne, tapped two months ago as ABC's entertainment president, reassured the buyers here that the network is tackling the problems that have led to a 23% drop in viewers this season and will revive "what traditionally made ABC a network," according to Kevin Brockman, ABC's senior vp entertainment communications. That likely will mean more family-oriented comedies and fanciful dramas -- and presumably less "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." "The overall message" to the ad buyers, Brockman said, "is how we lost our way" and what the Walt Disney Co. unit is doing to stem the slide, adding that the reception from the buyers was "incredibly positive." The presentations offered the clearest signal yet that ABC is planning a major shakeup in its primetime programming. For the past two years, the network has depended heavily on "Millionaire," at one point scheduling the game show four times a week. But "Millionaire's" ratings have eroded alongside those of other one-time hits like "Dharma & Greg" and "The Drew Carey Show." As a result, ABC might be facing one of its most difficult advertising upfronts in years. Brockman said the network wanted to return to "kid-friendly" shows in the 8 p.m. hour, becoming more "adult-centric" as the night goes on. He even cited "Fantasy Island," Aaron Spelling's wish-fulfillment soap from the late '70s, as the type of "playful" programming that ABC once pioneered and hopes to revive in spirit, if not in fact. At least one media buyer was impressed with ABC's pitch. "Susan Lyne did a great job; she's a very good presenter," said Bill Cella, chairman of Magna Global USA. "I think they're trying to do everything they can to get the ship back on track." Cella particularly liked the pitch for "Capital City," a pilot from writer-producer Rod Lurie, that Cella described as a "fast-paced" drama set in Washington. News Flashes (March 22, 2002)Edited by John McKimson.Eight Million Is Enough?... From laradio.com... Do You Want to be a Millionaire? You might think it would be simple to give away $8 million in $1 million increments (the $1 million is paid out over 40 years). The "guaranteed" $8 million giveaway has been promoted heavily by KIIS, in fact, it is called the "Dees Million Dollar Three-Peat." Rick Dees had been giving out the local KIIS number as the number to call when you hear three "N Sync songs in a row. Wrong number. The $8 million is part of the national Clear Channel promotion. The telephone number confusion got so confusing that KIIS pd John Ivey had to go on the air with Rick to straighten it out. I would assume there are enormous legal issues if not done properly to avoid misleading the public. Rick then began to promote the 866 number, in fact, asked John for permission to give $1,000 to the designated caller who could recite the million-dollar phone number. The catch was that you had to call the local KIIS number to participate in the $1,000 side promotion. Now, our heads were really swimming. They get the designated caller and ask her for the national 866 number that had just been repeated at least a dozen times and she gives the local number, 1-800-RicDees, and doesn't win. The next caller got it right.

News Flashes (March 20, 2002)Edited by John McKimson.AM 1260 Changes Format... Posted by SuperRadioFan on 3/19/2002... "K-JAZZ 1260 AM changes format to "Adult Standards" at midnight Friday. In April, Saul Levine claims their power will increase from 5,000 watts to 20,000 watts (I assume that's daytime power only). BTW, just to clarify, the change is at midnight Thursday NIGHT. No word on if they keep the same air staff. Lawrence Tanter (their PD and air talent) IS keeping his night job as PA announcer at Lakers home games :>). Also, the reported power increase to 20,000 is at odds with the construction permit shown at radio-locator.com. That shows current power at 5,000 watts (change pattern at night) and the CP shows 15,000 watts daytime and 7,500 watts night. Maybe Engineer can give the scoop with a comment. As far as format of the month club, remember this station will fill the void left by KLAC when they went all-talk earlier last year. When 1260 previously was "adult standards", they had KLAC (with a much much better signal) as competition. Time will tell."
Wang-Net
Radio & Records (includes Arbitrons) Saul Levine's KJAZ-AM, Los Angeles will switch back to nostalgia format.. Starting Friday the station will dumps its jazz format and switch its call letters to KSUR or K-Surf. For more on this story by Ocean County Register, click here. GO!!!! Adult standards returning to the area on 1260 AM... KLAC/570 AM dropped the adult standards format months ago for talk. Well, starting at midnight Friday, "contemporary" adult standards return to L.A. and Orange County listeners on 1260 AM, which is dropping jazz and the call letters KJAZ for KSUR, or K-Surf. There will be a power increase to 20,000 watts from 5,000 in April, says owner Saul Levine, so reception should be stronger in Orange County.
TV Wires (Mar 20, 2002)Edited by John McKimson, temporary editor of DFS News.IT'S SPRING! IT'S SPRING! WOO-HOO! DIE WINTER DIE!
Electronic Media: The White House has proposed legislation that would reassign the UHF channels 60 through 69 by auctioning off the frequencies for wireless radio use. Before it actually auctions the frequencies, though, the government wants assurances that the 99 broadcasters currently operating on those channels will vacate the premises, at least eventually. KSWB 69, which airs WB programming from the Frog, falls on the far end of that spectrum. That's a problem because the law currently says that the broadcasters can stay put until the transition to digital television transmission technology is complete. The end of the transition is defined as when 85 percent of the viewers are capable of receiving digital television, something many observers don't expect to happen for a decade or more. (and we know that my boss David Tanny ain't going to buy a digital TV as he nears retirement from TV watching at age 45 or earlier since there's basically nothing good on network TV anymore.) But the White House's new legislative proposal, which was quietly forwarded to congressional leaders Feb. 28, would make the broadcasters in the 60-69 band vacate it forcibly than to vacate the channels involuntarily by the end of 2006. BTW: For Weird Al trivia buffs...his fictional TV channel falls on channel 62!

Media Week: Viacom's Nickelodeon rolled out its new kids programming, both for the cable network and for the Saturday-morning block the net programs for sibling CBS. The popular Nick series Hey Arnold! and The Wild Thornberrys will move to CBS on Saturday mornings this fall as part of Nickelodeon's new strategy to primarily target kids 6-11 (instead of 2-5) on the CBS block. Not to be outdone, AOL Time Warner's Kids' WB! will air four original episodes of Cartoon Network's hit Powerpuff Girls this summer. Including their combined cable and broadcast audiences, Viacom currently is the top dog among kids 6-11, although the AOL combination of Kids' WB! and Cartoon is gaining. Yet on the broadcast side, where the big battle will take place this fall, Kids' WB! is the clear leader in the 6-11 demo, having topped the ratings the past three seasons. Taking aim at Kids WB's strength, Nickelodeon last week announced a revamped Saturday-morning schedule on CBS for this fall, with more programming targeting kids 6-11. Gone are the younger-skewing Bob the Builder, Little Bill, Oswald and Franklin. In their place will be Hey Arnold!, Thornberrys, As Told to Ginger and Pelswick. On its three-hour CBS block, Nick will retain only one hour from the current season, which targets kids 2-5. Those two shows, Blue's Clues and Dora the Explorer, will air from 7 to 8 a.m. on Saturdays. The head-to-head competition for viewers 6-11 will begin at 8 a.m., when Hey Arnold! will go up against the Kids' WB!'s Cubix, followed by Thornberrys against Scooby-Doo at 8:30 a.m. At 11 a.m., Ginger will face off against X Men: Evolution, while at 11:30 a.m., Pelswig will oppose Kids WB!'s The Mummy: Secrets of the Medjai. X Men, with an average 4.4 rating among kids 6-11 this season, and The Mummy, with a 3.7, are Nos. 2 and 4 respectively among broadcast shows in that demo on Saturdays. The WB will air two new kids shows, Mucha Lucha! and Ozzy & Drix, at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., opposite CBS' The Early Show. Dinos, Crocs to Roam NBC... Discovery Networks is putting the finishing touches on the three-hour Saturday-morning block it will air on NBC beginning this fall. Among the shows said to be slated for the NBC block is Walking With Dinosaurs, a follow-up to the popular British miniseries that Discovery aired two years ago. Crocodile Files will spin off the popular Animal Planet series Crocodile Hunter, presumably with that show's star, Steve Irwin; Hunter includes some animated elements and could someday become an animated series on the NBC block. Junkyard Kids will follow the format of the popular Junkyard Wars on Discovery's TLC, with kids using their ingenuity to build contraptions. Endurance is described as a kids version of Survivor. Rounding out the schedule are two scripted ensemble shows: Kendall's Safari portrays a kid relocated to South Africa, while Black Hole High is said to be about youngsters on another planet. There's also talk of a shark program. Discovery is continuing development talks with producers such as Tommy Lynch (Nick's The Secret World of Alex Mack) and veteran animator Phil Roman (The Simpsons). On NBC, Discovery may open the season with some repurposed, reshaped programs from its cable networks and add in more originals at midseason.

Hi Everyone,
We're slowly getting settled in South Florida, but I
still have a lot of unpacking to do! It's hard to do
that when you're dealing with a two-year old, two
dogs, and trying to start a business at the same time.
My studio is somewhat up and running. I'm back from
Maui with 11 interviews and 9 1/2 live sets on tape
that I'll be assembling into a radio special. I'll
make sure it's posted somewhere so that anyone
interested will be able to hear it.
(Bruce, you'll especially love the John Eddie. He's
grown so much as an artist over the past year... he
did a great set, and our interview was a lot of fun.)
Here's the question I have for this group of music
lovers: After meeting with a few radio and record
people in Maui, I decided to try to put together a
syndicated Triple A show. Sort of a countdown...
though I don't think a countdown show really lends
itself to this format. So it would be a
quasi-countdown... Definitely taking the songs from
the Triple A charts... but, for example, instead of
playing the Chris Isaak single every week for 10
weeks, feature other songs from the album instead
(while mentioning that "Let Me Down Easy" was #2 again
for the 3rd week in a row). In addition, we'd do some
"flash forward" type features where we play songs that
are just coming out that I think have great potential,
and some interview and live segments as well.
Any suggestions for what to call such a show, and any
suggestion on things you would and would not want to
hear in such a show would be greatly appreciated. I
hope to get started on a demo for this show in the
next few weeks (as soon as I'm done with the Maui
show), so get your feedback to me asap.
And, finally, I hope to be up and running on Sirius by
the end of this week! It's about time....
Thanks as always for your support!
