Yahoo! Geocites Acting Like Osama as It Drops Free FTP Access (March 4, 2002)

Side note: you can tell I do most of my writing while I'm listening to the Dr. Demento Show off of WKIT or KOZT, whichever drops the packets the least.

Now, on to today's topics!

Answer: Young little guys that got too big too fast by eating up independent properties and ruins them.

Question: What is Clear Channel?

That could also be the right answer, but the answer we're expecting is "What is Yahoo!? Yahoo."

Yahoo, the once small company that started out as an obscure web search engine, has apparently gotten too big for its britches. Like Clear Channel, Yahoo! has been swallowing up and overexpanding their services to include stuff like free broadband video, which most of us have no need for, while losing money when the banner ad market almost disappearred last year.

So guess what Yahoo! is gutting now? The former independent free website provider known as Geocities (or Geo-S*tties as I call it now). Yahoo, like Clear Channel, is dicking around with yours truly and other websteaders as Yahoo! made negative changes to their webhosting packages such as limiting bandwidth, which shut down my former location for most of my stuff on Geocities late last year. Even their pay packages are lame as they too limit bandwidth, forcing the websteader to shell out more money to keep the site open.

Now in a big F-You to all free websteaders on Geocities, Yahoo! has decided to eliminate FTP access to their free web accounts, as well as adding FTP only for those who pay $5 a month for the priviledge, but bandwidth remains just as limited as the free account. Yahoo is a dictatorship out of control, even acting worse than Adolf Hitmer as it shuts down websites for no reason for those who refuse to upgrade to their pay services.

Yahoo also swallowed up the independent mailing list E Groups last year. Now, Yahoo! is planning to turn the former E Groups, now called Yahoo Groups, into pay services while limiting the features on the free accounts.

Yahoo is the Osama Bin Laden of the Internet. I'm seriously planning to shut down the Yahoo mailing lists and move them to Topica, but Topica doesn't have features such as file upload and automatic reminder sending like Yahoo Groups does. But guess what Groups features are ripe for turning into a pay feature to further exploit the Groups user?

www.Geocities.com/davidtanny To Shut Down April 1st (March 4, 2002)

For those who still have my old websites bookmarked, now is the time to change them!

Starting on April 1st, 2002, and no tricks, I'm shutting down my website on Geocities due to issues I outlined here, plus the Yahoo employees are rather ignorant and otherwise unqualified to be running a webhost in the first place. They're idiots, just like the Clear Channel radio (especially those in the San Diego Outland) folks! Neither knows the market they are serving any better!

If you have bookmarks on your browser or weblinks on your webpage that start with something that looks like this:

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/4656/
http://www.geocities.com/davidtanny
http://www.geocities.com/~davidtan
Then you must change your links immediately as they won't be working after March 31st (or sooner). Please set your bookmarks to http://www.davesfunstuff.com/ instead.

If you wish to bookmark several places on my website, there are only a few you should bookmark. Please do not bookmark any other page (especially the third and fourth level pages on my website) since they are subject to moving or deletion without any referrals.

Here are the links you should use on your bookmarks and websites:

http://www.davesfunstuff.com/

Also, many other websites have changed locations. Please check the davesfunstuff.com portal for the complete lineup!

Thank you for your patronage and support.
