FOX Cuts Back on Sitcom Orders
-
FOX has reduced its back nine episode orders of
sitcoms UNDECLARED, TITUS, and GROUNDED FOR LIFE.
UNDECLARED is now only expected to have a 17-episode
season, while TITUS and GROUNDED have had their
22-episode orders reduced to 20 each.
"I hate to say it, but UNDECLARED may soon go
the way of FREAKS AND GEEKS," announced Apatow.
"FOX has asked us to shoot five less shows then
they ordered from us this fall. That basically
means instead of shooting nine episodes in addition to
the thirteen we shot last year, we will be shooting four.
Not a big show of confidence. This probably means that
come spring they will pull us off for a mid-season
replacement. Airing sporadically, a short order and
then pulled in spring time -- sure sounds like a F&G
flashback to me. If you care, now would be the
time to write some letters to FOX and the media.
Last time it didnÝt save F&G from the axe but it
definitely kept us shooting the show a lot longer
then if you didnÝt write."
You can send those letters to FOX, Attn: Gail Berman
/ UNDECLARED, P.O. Box 900, Beverly Hills, CA 90213.

San Diego

KUSI-TV 51's Laura Buxton departs the station. KUSI is on most San Diego county cable systems at Channel 9; Fallbrook has a repeater on Channel 47.

Nationwide

Radio Online: http://www.radio-online.com/ - FCC Rescinds 'Slim Shady' Fine... The FCC's Enforcement Bureau has rescinded its Notice of Apparent Liability fining KKMG/Colorado Springs $7000 for airing the edited version of Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady." The agency had cited the Citadel CHR outlet last June for airing the song.

Electronic Media: http://www.emonline.com/ - FCC examine EchoStar's adherence to must-carry rules

Kurt Hanson's Radio and Internet Newsletter: http://kurthanson.com/ - Clear Channel Communications has pulled the plug on World Class Rock internet only streaming station. Ending an innovative and expensive but apparently unsuccessful experiment in webcasting, Clear Channel Communications has apparently, without fanfare, pulled the plug on its Internet-only WorldClassRock.com website. However, in a clever move, Clear Channel has kept the site active and has pointed the site's "Listen Here" link to the webcast of Clear Channel-owned broadcast station KBCO/Denver, the AAA (Adult Album Alternative)-formatted station that was, I believe, the originator of the "World Class Rock" slogan years ago. Lots of more stuff about WCR and related items on his website.

Radio Business Report: http://www.radiobusinessreport.com/ - Has payola made a comeback?... House of Representatives member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) will be looking into whether or not payola has once again reared its head in the relationship between radio stations and record companies. The use of independent promoters by record companies may have opened the door, according to a pair of articles in the Los Angeles Times. The independent reps can work out contracts with local stations which are not directly tied to the airing of any particular release. Then, the tunes the independent promoter is pushing just happen to receive the desired airplay. According to the Times, the independent promoters also often sign and promote new artists, getting them airplay on local stations with which they have a relationship in hopes to generate enough buzz there to sell the rights to a large label for potential national distribution. It is not illegal to pay to have a song played over the air as long as the payment is fully disclosed. Conyers plans to launch hearings on the issue later this year...

Broadcasting and Cable: http://www.broadcastingcable.com - Cosby reunion in works... Carsey-Werner-Mandabach partner Tom Werner told TV critics gathered in Los Angeles Tuesday that his studio is producing a special The Cosby Show reunion show for NBC.
