Letters: State of San Diego Radio Address (Jan 2, 2002)Posted by Ben Shanton on the board:Although I take issue on a few details, for the most part local radio could be listenable again if PD's took heed to his suggestions. I cannot agree any stronger about how agonizingly awful it has become to listen to this area's stations. From Robert McCarthy: KOGO going all-news would be much more preferable than hanging on to talk shows. The other owners in the past tried and failed a lot of times. Clear Channel has enough resources to do the job right, if not, partner with KGTV or Fox 6 to do a 24-hour newscast. KCBQ should let 1240 have its talk shows and go back to playing the oldies from the fifties through the 70s only this time with retro-style ads where the jocks read the commercials live on the air and playing the best oldies during the day, but having a theme each night such as the deep 60's or the rockin 50's, a countdown of a week in music chart history going from the number 30 song of the week up to number one, and late nights, they could do some classic CBS Radio Mystery Theatre and other radio oldies after 10pm. 99.3 should dump the KSON teaser blips and just use their resources to beef up their ratings and fine tune their mix to better serve the male listeners in the area. KSON can program country for the females all they want. From Pete: I live near the Mesa College where the KSDS 88.3 stick is located and I can see the stick not more than 1/2 a mile from where I live. It also messes up my reception of XETV and I can't get KLON because the station is too strong. I can't get Z90 on my portable unit either. Why can't KSDS move its transmitter to Mount La Jolla or whatever that hill is where all the transmitters are located? I had to buy a more expensive radio so I can get Z90 better. Ed: The name of the hill is Mt. Soledad. Letters: Yahoos and Boo-hoos (Jan 2, 2002)From Rick Andrews:Loved your list... here are a few of mine:
Boo-hoo! to My 94.1 for trying Mix95.7 all over again using a different name and location.
Yahoo! to B94.9 for surviving a clear channel attack! Impressive.
Yahoo! to KBig, in LA, for surviving another rumor of format change.
Yahoo! to KBig for keeping the top of the hour time checks. Cheesy but fun.
Yahoo! to Christmas 94.1. Interesting marketing move, and actually enjoyed listening!
Yahoo! to Rick Roberts on KFMB for talking about something other than politics.
Boo-hoo! to KGB for lousy music and a cranky morning team who picks on Star.
Almost sounds like they are jealous.
Boo-hoo! to Mix95.7. Just couldn't figure out what you wanted to play.
Pick a format and stay with it for a while.
Yahoo! to Star 100.7 for hiring Rick Morton from Palm Springs.
Boo-hoo! for not putting Rick Morton on the air enough!
Yahoo! to Star 100.7 for canning Ricky Lopez. How did he get the job anyway?
Boo-hoo! for putting Dr. Lori on the air every night at Star 100.7.
Boo-hoo! to Star 100.7 for all the morning commercials!
Jeff & Jer are great but sometimes all I hear from North County to San Diego are commercials.
Yahoo! to Channel 933 for actually going live on some weekends.
Yahoo! to Channel 933 for leaving Nastyman and bringing in Playhouse.
Boo-hoo! to Channel 933 for keeping Haze on the radio.
Who wants to hear a 30 year old man say: "it's off the hook" 10 times a night.
Yahoo! to KYXY for keeping with the "Soft Rock" theme. It worked eventually.
Yahoo! to Channel 933 for "BoyToy Jessey." Great radio voice and should be on the air more.
Boo-hoo! for keeping the lame name.
Discussions: Dance Music Radio (Jan 2, 2002)Talk about 2002 being the year that dance music returns to the forefront is the topic. Groove, house, freestyle, electronica, techno, etc. This is music for today's late baby boomer/early gen-Xer. The teenagers dig it in nightclubs. Some older folks relax to it while playing Tetris or Pac Man on their 2GHz computer. Whatever, dance music has wide appeal. Here's what people in the World Wide Vibe messageboard are saying...
Name: Tony Santiago Date: 12/31/01 5:35 p.m.I had predicted in other years in alt.music.dance how the upcoming year always holds promise for dance music. I think this year more than ever, dance music will be pushed into the forefront. And I am not talking about 'KTU type stations. I am talking more like Party 105, 95.3 Party and the BRAND SPANKING NEW Party 93.1 station (I heard it over the phone...this station is going to smash Power 96 to bits!) The reason why I state that dance music will be in the forefront in 2002, unfortunately, has to do with the September 11th tragedy. I dunno about any of you, but I have noticed a slight change in the way people are listening to music, along with what is being put out by record labels. Right now, it seems like the teenage pop (led by N'Sync, Britney, Backstreet) is starting to fade out while even the smaller pop acts (Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, O-Town) are falling out of the radar. Hip-hop sales have been plummeting over the last couple of months. Seems like few people wanna still hear "gangsta" material...leaning more for the r&b sounds like Alicia Keys....music that has meaning. So, what does that mean for dance music? I strongly believe that cutting edge dance music will start to dominate as people want to become happy again and escape all that is the world post 9-11. I see as more people want to hear more trance, progressive house, etc...more radio stations will pick up on it and give it a shot. Since Miami / So. Florida just debuted a station today, if the ratings are as strong as other dance stations, it will only be a matter of time before L.A. starts to bring in a dance music format (and I mean dance music as a FORMAT...not just dance-friendly stations), along with other major cities like Washington, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and just maybe New York (if 'LIR sees the impact). Save this message and let's see if I am right about this. It unfortunately took a tragedy to see what our priorities are. And it seems like more people want to hear positive, uplifiting music, instead of "hood" music that only talks about the negatives, and the cutesy pop stuff that is becoming plain tired out. People...this is finally going to be our year! Goodness knows we've been long deserving/suffering for it! As they say in radio...stay tuned! TONY SANTIAGO RESPONSE: Name: Justin Date: 1/1/02 3:46 a.m. In Reply To: 2002...the year dance music thrives! (Tony Santiago)I really hope so Tony. I have been waiting for a day like this as well! I am very excited to see what this year brings us. I really do hope major markets take a hint and begin to launch dance stations, because that is a format that is LONG OVERDUE! As I said in my previous post, I am from the Houston area and would love to hear dance music again on the airwaves here since dance left us about a year ago when the only station that had decent dance music decided to go "Non-Stop Hip Hop"! (ugh!) Let us hope for the best in 2002! Name: LM Date: 12/31/01 3:25 p.m.WTMI is now a Dance CHR! Its a good day for the Dance genre in America. What makes this more intresting is 1) Run by COX. More dollars to spend than say Big City Radio to support the station. And they now own Two stations that are Dance. This one is better though than 95.3 WPYO. 2) Pure Dance on a Powerful Full Signal. All other dance stations are Class A's. WKTU is the only Class B with Dance working well as part of its format. But they aren't Pure Dance like the new Cox station! 3) In Miami and surrounding areas. 4) Liner saids, " No annoying Hip Hop!" LOL How many stations can say that? Even Cox's 953 Party cant say that line. Maybe 953 Party is in for a dancier change to. RESPONSES: Name: Tony Santiago Date: 12/31/01 5:19 p.m. In Reply To: Party 93.1-South Florida's Pure Dance Channel (LM) Just called a friend in Ft. Lauderdale to hear the station myself! NOW THIS IS WHAT A F#$%*IN DANCE STATION SHOULD SOUND LIKE IN A MAJOR CITY!! Then again for a market like Miami, this type of station WORKS! You can kiss Power 96 goodbye now! Way to go South Florida!! It's about time that a REAL dance station shows up! Now if only we can do something about 'KTU.... TONY SANTIAGO Name: Slinky Date: 12/31/01 7:39 p.m.Party 93.1 sounds great, but I don't think Miami is ready to kiss Power 96 goodbye quite yet. Party, if it isn't a stunt, still has no jocks and no mixers. Finding the right personalities is key to Party's success. You need people who know the music, who live the music, but can still relate to the casual dance fan. It's going to be an uphill battle for Party, but I think if they play their cards right, they can be one of the top stations in Miami. YOUR MISSION: CREATE A DANCE STATION Name: Brett Date: 12/31/01 12:40 p.m.Ok heres the assignment. We are going to create an all dance station. No R&B No Hip Hop just dance music. I dont want to hear this cant work either. Your job is to put together a playlist, so pormotional stuff and when to have mix shows. We are going to push the new music but through some old hits in as well. No boy bands or teenie music like Britney. Expand your mind and you will conquer. Have fun and get creative

Dance Music in San Diego
Posted by hip man on 1/1/2002, 0:18:14
at 1:16am, we have Channel 933 playing Digital Groove, 91.7 from TJ playing techno
from "La Boomba", and MORE-FM 98.9 playing "Rewire" dance mixes.
What's with L.A.? Just 104.3 playing disco is all I found up there. San Diego radio
is cookin' with dance tonight!

Waaaa.... I am stuck in Los Angeles. Where there is NO real dance music on the FM dial. I just
played the 2001 YEARMIX music video from TMF tonight, and it was SO GOOD. Almost ALL dance
music. That is what they listen to in Europe.

LA really did blow it last night. One Richard Humpty Vission mix was featured
on KPWR and it was way too short. KIIS didn't even have Klub KIIS.
Hey Hip Man, did Z90 feature any dance in their mixes?

What is D.T. Watching Tonight? (Jan 2, 2002)Want to be his girlfriend? You gotta watch and listen to the kind of entertainment he enjoys. No snobby NBC sitcoms or sleepy recycled dramas.Tomorrow...the ratings! Radio Wires (Jan 2, 2002)NationwideGavin - Industry: - Fewer Hours of Internet Radio Streamed Week Before Christmas Measurecast holiday numbers show listening down, but still popular.Media Week: http://www.mediaweek.com/ - The Best and Worst of 2001 THE BEST 1. The Sopranos (HBO) (can't watch it. Don't have pay TV) 2. Malcolm in the Middle (Fox) The sad but laugh-out-loud familiarity of TV's most dysfunctional family makes Malcolm in the Middle the Roseanne of the new millennium. Only let's hope that if the show runs nine years the winning lottery will not come calling. 3. Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS) (never seen it) 4. Gilmore Girls (WB) (don't watch chick dramas if they don't involve magic) 5. The West Wing (NBC) (waste of my time) 6. Survivor: The Australian Outback (CBS) (boring) 7. CSI (CBS) (huh?) 8. KCMG/92.3 FM rhythm oldies switches to urban adult contemporary and new call letters KHHT "Hot 92.3 FM." KFWB/980 AM announces that it will carry the Dodgers in 2003.
