San Diego Radio Survivor July 28, 2000OK. The summer's heat must have gotten to me.It just dawned on me that with the popularity of CBS's "Survivor" and all those other radio contest knock-offs of the TV show, I decided to go one step further, and create an interactive answer to the Survivor trend. Did I say "interactive?" Yes, I did. Let me explain. We're going to start with a list of some 20 or so San Diego radio stations on the FM and AM dial, and week by week, twice a week, a radio station will be knocked off the air until one radio station is left as the ultimate radio survivor! How does this work? Well, I'm going to spare you a cheap typed impression of host Jeff Probst and cut right to the chase. This is the San Diego Radio Station Survivor. The radio stations are the inhabitants of the radio band. You, yes, YOU, the readers collectively, are the Radio Tribal Council! The rules are simple: twice each week (this radio news post comes twice a week), you are presented with a list of radio stations on the San Diego radio dial. You send me the name of ONE radio station that you want to see removed from the "airwaves" on the radio dial once each session. In the next edition of Dave's Radio Waves, I'll tell you which station has been voted off, and it is removed from the "airwaves." Then, you, the Tribal Council, get to select another radio station to be voted off the air, and so forth until only one radio station remains some weeks later, and that radio station is declared the San Diego Radio Station Survivor. Simple enough? Good. Shall we begin?
San Diego Radio Station Survivor - Week OneWhich radio station do you want knocked off the air this week?
You have until Monday to send in your votes. Have fun. San Diego Radio Survivor VoteFrom Jack:I vote to remove the conductor of the contest from the "airwaves." (LOL!) L.A. Radio Survivor Poll? From Tom:Do you think you could please do one for the Los Angeles radio stations? Ed: If anyone's interested, please e-mail me and I'll start one after I finish with the San Diego poll. San Diego Radio Survivor Week 1b Aug 1, 2000OK. The votes are in for the first round of elimination in the San Diego Radio Station Survivor voting poll. You, the Radio Tribal Council, have spoken and voted for several radio stations to knock "off the air" from the San Diego radio island this past weekend. Monday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating a second radio station from the island. Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail: KPRZ 1210 - Who cares about that station! XJAZZ 540 - That station sucks! XJAZZ 540 - Jazz music on AM is useless. Just my opinion. ROCK 105.3 - this isn't the kind of rock and roll I grew up with. KIFM 98.1 - this fluff isn't jazz, it's just watered-down adult contemporary. Rock 105.3 - as a Republican, I am offended with B.C. and Woody's comment about the Bush/Cheney ticket, and he used Cheney's first name before Bush in a sexually suggestive manner. KJOY 94.1 - they played a really bad set of songs for the 6pm Time Warp machine. KCBQ 1170 - it hasn't been the same since it went good talk. I want Leykis back. KOGO 600 - the big one, my foot! I can't get it in Temecula! Rock 105.3 - Please shut up Howard Stern! You're a bore to listen to. KIFM 98.1 - traditional jazz is what jazz is, and KIFM plays anything but jazz. Just a lot of spacey pop instrumentals. Rock 105.3 - It gives me a headache. Jazz 98.1 - this contemporary stuff is an insult to jazz historians.OK. That's all that came in. The Radio Tribal Council has decided by poll to eliminate Rock 105.3 from the "San Diego Airwave island!" But, enough of you mentioned KIFM this week to wish it was elimiated from the "airwaves," so to bend the rules a bit, I decided to allow the second-place vote to take effect and eliminate KIFM 98.1 from the "San Diego Airwave Island." Now, we come to week 1a. Two stations are eliminated and the voting process begins over again. To repeat, this is the San Diego Radio Station Survivor. So which radio station do you want knocked off the air this week?
You have until Thursday at 9pm to send in your votes. Have fun. San Diego Radio Survivor Week 2a Aug 5, 2000OK. The votes are in for the second round of elimination in the San Diego Radio Station Survivor voting poll. You, the Radio Tribal Council, have spoken and voted for several radio stations to knock "off the air" from the San Diego radio island this past weekend. Thursday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating a second radio station from the island. Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail: 95.7 - they played that sad song "Unbreak My Heart" yucch! 91.1 - I hate No Doubt! I'm still voting to remove XJAZZ 540 from the Island. KFMB 760 - there's no use for this station anymore since the Padres left 540 - jazz does not belong on AM! 96.5 - they play too many wimpy love songs! 95.7 - Phil Collins is boring. 100.7 - I'm sick of hearing about Starvivor every 3 minutes! KJOY 94.1 plays disco music and it's supposed to play easy pop. What kind of direction is it? Last time, we eliminated Rock 105.3 and KIFM 98.1. OK. That's all that came in. The Radio Tribal Council has decided by poll to eliminate XJAZZ 540 from the "San Diego Airwave island!" Now, we come to week 2a. Three stations are eliminated and the voting process begins over again. To repeat, this is the San Diego Radio Station Survivor. So which radio station do you want knocked off the air this week?
You have until Monday at 9pm to send in your votes. Have fun. San Diego Radio Survivor Week 2b Aug 8, 2000OK. The votes are in for the third round of elimination in the San Diego Radio Station Survivor voting poll. You, the Radio Tribal Council, have spoken and voted for several radio stations to knock "off the air" from the San Diego radio island this past weekend. Monday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating a second radio station from the island. Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail: KJOY 94.1 - since it doesn't air classical anymore, what's the use? Star 100.7 - So many crappy stations to choose from but only one at a time to get the boot. Running that Starvivor Hype to the ground is now getting on my nerves whenever I turn to that station, so I'm banishing "The Star" this time. Not only that but why do they have to play the same songs whenever they play 80's music? I could find a bigger selection of songs from any period of just a few short months from the 80's than gets played on that station for the whole decade. Z-90...it's been a slow music day at the station during the day. where the f--k is the dance music? This and 933 are both jokes! KJOY 941 because its dated 70's mellow junk is a complete bore KGB 101.5 - I had enough of their moronic morning show and switched to Planet Oldies 94.9 - their selection is so repetitious that I just listen to it once a month and that's it Star 100.7 - bye Star, now give me music. Last two years ago, they talked and talked about that stupid rollercoaster thing ad nauseum, now they're doing the same boring thing with this contest. I switched to Mix and almost won free electricity. I like Mix's contest better than Star's. Channel 933 - this morning's selection made me drowsy at work. After a third song in a row by a noname soft artist, I switched to Star, but they don't play enough music. KJOY 94.1 - the seventies is over! KYXY is soooooooooo wimpy it makes me want to wield an axe and bust open the radio! KGB 101.5 - it's the same narrow selection of rock songs selected by that idiot programmer everyday. Star 100.7 - when was the last time they played "When I Think of You" by Janet Jackson? It's my favorite 80's song and Star just don't play it. Z-90 played it at noon opposite Star's so-called 80's request hour. Planet 103.7 has people talking into the songs and it's really annoying Disney 1240 ==it's not local, it's all canned via satellite KSDO 1130 is a waste of effort. Sell it to HBC and put on a Spanish country format to improve things! KGBehind the times for not even bothering to play today's rock that Sets is playing. KSPA because they fired Doug Best because his program didn't fit their format. What the hell are these radio people trying to pull on us? The first time, we eliminated Rock 105.3 and KIFM 98.1. Last time, we knocked XJAZZ 540 off the air. Now, we have a three-way tie for first place, so you know what? Those three stations are pulled! The Radio Tribal Council has decided by poll to eliminate KJOY, Star, and KGB from the "San Diego Airwave island!" And since I still don't care for Radio Disney, except when they play Dr. Demento-type tunes instead of sleepy boy bands, I decided to bend the rules again and eliminate it from the airwaves as well! Now, we come to week 2b. Seven stations are eliminated and the voting process begins over again. To repeat, this is the San Diego Radio Station Survivor. So which radio station do you want knocked off the air this week?
You have until Thursday at 9pm to send in your votes. Have fun. San Diego Radio Survivor Week 3a Aug 11, 2000OK. The votes are in for the fourth round of elimination in the San Diego Radio Station Survivor voting poll. You, the Radio Tribal Council, have spoken and voted for several radio stations to knock "off the air" from the San Diego radio island this past week. Thursday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating another radio station from the island. Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail: Z-90...still a slowpoke many times. I put on CD's instead. Oldies 94.9 - I still don't like old radio stations Channel 933 - what a joke! You call this crap Top 40? Planet 103.7...can't Denise shut up during the day? KSPA still because they fired Doug Best. Enuff said! XLNC 90.7 - For jamming KPFK on the same frequency! This time I gotta vote for MIX 95.7. It doesn't deserve one of my presets, so, it doesn't deserve to survive. 'Nuff said. KFMB 760 because I just can't stand Ted Leitner!!!!! 91X because their corporate owners Jackorr bought The Flash and flushed it while expecting its former listeners to listen to their crap on 91X? Ain't going to work with me! Alternative CD's beat the heck out of their predictable short playlist! Hmmm. One vote for each station. That's weird. Looks like I'll have to break the tie with my pocket vote I keep in reserve. Normally I junk a few stations at a time if there's a tie, but since there's just one vote for each station, I'll have to pick one of the stations that I like the least. I put in my vote to eliminate Channel 933 because they are simply not playing the hit mix that should resemble a Top 40 station, and rather, they're a cheap knockoff of a hybrid slow jam and teen contemporary station, a very narrow format that seems to pull in the female listeners 12-24, but nobody else in the other demographics gives a damn about it! Credit the inept programmer Diana Laird for producing an unlistenable mix of The WB meets KYXY! The Radio Tribal Council has decided by poll to eliminate Channel 933 from the "San Diego Radio Airwave Island!" And no, I'm not eliminating another station this round. You'll have to resubmit your votes, or change your mind and submit a station you discovered that sucked even more! Now, we come to week 3a. So which radio station do you want knocked off the air this week?

Monday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating another radio station from the island. Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail: Z-90...their hip hop is sooo 1990's... XLNC 90.7...For blocking KPFK's signal! I vote for 91X.Their playlist is crappy. Oldies 94.9 - I still don't like old radio stations Planet 103.7...they chop up the classic rock and they played some wimpy Starsh-t today. KSPA still because they fired Doug Best, and I'll keep voting for it until it's off the air XLNC 90.7 - because their classical music sounds like Top 40 chop shop stuff. Are you sure Star isn't programming the music there? KFMB 760 and I just can't stand Ted Leitner! I vote to KSDO 1130 and I can't stand Silly and Schooter's stupid business show. Magic 92.5 - I spent a friggin' two hours in the hot sun in a line of cars, wasting $5 of gas for air conditioning, and all I got was a lousy T-shirt! XLNC - Stands for eXtra Lousy Nonessential Crap The Radio Tribal Council has decided by poll to eliminate XLNC 90.7 from the "San Diego Radio Airwave Island!" Now, we come to week 3b. This is the San Diego Radio Station Survivor. The radio stations are the inhabitants of the radio band. You, yes, YOU, the readers collectively, are the Radio Tribal Council! AND....if I get over 100 votes for the poll before this Friday, I'll be able to knock off about 1/3 of the stations as a BONUS, so get your friends to vote! I asked you to get more friends to vote for the stations to knock off the air. Let's see if we reached 100 by the deadline! Because of the volume, I sorted them out by frequency. 600 KOGO because I don't agree with Roger Hedgecock's views KOGO has the worst top of the hour newscasts- three headlines, then three minutes of commercials! 600 because the Padres just plain stink KOGO has the homophobic Dr.Laura on 760 760...I can't stand Ted!!! Once that's eliminated, I'll vote for 600 to be gone! 760 -- shut up Ted already! 1130 I vote again to KSDO 1130 and I can't stand Silly and Schooter's stupid business show. KSDO is of no use to me 1170 KCBQ-QUACK talk 1170 because they took off Leykis 1170 is just not entertaining 1210 KPRZ 1210 - Does anyone actually care about this station? 1450 KSPA again because they fired Doug Best, and I'll keep voting for it until it's off the air KSPA - bring back Best or else I'm not coming back 90.3 Z-90 no more hip hop please 90.3 plays that R&B slow crap that is a bore to listen to 91.1 91X plays crap like Korn, Limp Bizkit, and other rock I can't stand 91suX I vote again for 91X 91X---they're just not the cutting edge of rock 91X won't play the new XTC song Sets plays 92.5 Magic 92.5 because all I got sitting in the line of cars was a sunburn and a lousy teeshirt 94.9 Oldies 94.9 time to move on already 95.7 Mix StinkX not as bad as Star but not with today's times 96.5 KYXY plays backstreet boys for no reason, do they think we're kids? KYXY is just plain too slow 103.7 Planet 103.7-their music is too old Planet---we had our fill of classic rock from another era Well, I said that if I got 100 votes, I'd eliminate seven stations. Looks like we fell way short. So, I'll just chop down one station instead. The Radio Tribal Council has decided by poll to eliminate 91X from the "San Diego Radio Airwave Island!" Monday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating another radio station from the island. Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail. I asked you to get more friends to vote for the stations to knock off the air. Let's see if we reached 50 by the deadline! Some decided as usual to resubmit the same votes, Because of the volume, I sorted them out by frequency. 600 KOGO - Since we're within striking distance of knocking off KOGO (Hate Radio), I'm going to vote it off the Island. Let Rush, Dr. Laura, & Roger have the same fate befall them on the way back to the mainland as the fishermen in "Perfect Storm" as well. KOGO has the worst top of the hour newscasts- three headlines, then three minutes of commercials! KOGO needs to get rid of that annoying Dr. Laura. 600 lost the talented Rick Roberts to KFMB so they could stick with the crook Hedgecock. 760 760 -- shut up Ted already! 760 -- Ted Leitner is just plain overrated! 1130 I vote again to KSDO 1130 and I can't stand Silly and Schooter's stupid business show. 1170 1170 because they took off Leykis 1170 has nothing interesting on 1450 KSPA again because they fired Doug Best, and I'll keep voting for it until it's off the air KSPA - bring back Best or else I'm not coming back KSPA for being clueless in thinking that Doug Best's show doesn't fit their format. KSPA lost Doug Best's educational music show, so we decided to lose KSPA. 90.3 90.3 plays that R&B slow crap that is a bore to listen to 94.9 Moldy Oldies needs a new format to play oldies of the 80's. The 60's are way over. Oldies 94.9 should play oldies of the more recent past, not just in the distant past. 96.5 KYXY is just plain too slow 103.7 Planet---we had our fill of classic rock from another era Well, I said that if I got 50 votes, I'd eliminate five. I choose 760 because I never listen to it anyway 1130 KOGO'S off the island, but since KSDO still broadcasts Hedgecock and Co. during ball games, we have to get rid of KSDO to eliminate these pests for good. I vote again to KSDO 1130 and I can't stand Silly and Schooter's stupid business show. KSDO (no reason was given) KSDO keeps moving Rush to 1130. We can get him on 640 I therefore remove KSDO from my presets for sounding like a rubbish pile KSDO 1130 because they keep preempting the funny Phil Hendrie for the unfunny Roger Hedgecock 1170 KCBQ. End of story KCBQ for losing Leykis 1360 KPOP (no reason was given) 90.3 Z90 (no reason was given) 90.3 (no reason was given) Jammin Z90 doesn't play enough dance 92.5 Magic 92.5 because I won a lousy shirt instead of a prize 92.5 for playing the same old songs so many times XHRM for flushing the Flash 94.9 KBEST is just moldy oldies we've heard enough times KBZT as it doesn't play our recent oldies such as the 80's 96.5 KYXY is just plain too slow KYXY (no reason was given) 96.5, case closed. Who needs Dr. Laura and Rush anyway when KFI comes in strong everywhere KSDO does. I vote again to KSDO 1130 and I can't stand Silly and Schooter's stupid business show. I therefore remove KSDO from my presets for sounding like a rubbish pile KSDO 1130 because they keep preempting the funny Phil Hendrie for the unfunny Roger Hedgecock KSDO 1130 (no reason was given) KSDO sounds pretty junked up to me! 1170 KCBQ (no reason was given) 1170 Talk? Bring back the oldies! 1170 because they dumped Tom Leykis! 1360 KPOP (no reason was given) KPOP is soo 1900's. 90.3 Jammin Z90 doesn't play enough dance 90.3 has outdated hip hop. 92.5 92.5 isn't Magic without any new soul grooves! San Diego Radio Survivor Week 6 Sep 1, 2000This is the tenth round of elimination in the San Diego Radio Station Survivor voting poll. You, the Radio Tribal Council, have spoken and voted for several radio stations to knock "off the air" from the San Diego radio island this past week. Thursday's deadline has passed. Votes being recevied now will go towards eliminating another radio station from the island. Special Announcement:The vote will be extended to seven days due to the Labor Day weekend. Due to personal matters, my web updates will be infrequent, so therefore, there will be no 6b Tuesday, so this week is just plain 6, meaning, the votes will count for seven days until 9pm Thursday the 7th.Here are the votes and comments that came in via e-mail. 760 760 -- Ted Leitner is just plain overrated! I'm going to keep e-mailing you until its gone! KFMB for losing the Padres 1130 KSDO has that Silly and Scotter show that's so infantile (this e-mail came in late due to problems on the Internet; we already eliminated the station in the last session) 1170 KCBQ 1170 -- For dumping Leykis. 1170 Talk? Bring back the oldies! 1170 because they dumped Tom Leykis! 1210 KPRZ - who listens anyway? 1360 KPOP is soo 1900's. KPOP -- I just don't need it anyway. 90.3 90.3 has outdated hip hop. KBEST = KWORST KBZT - I'm sick of those 60's girl groups and British hits ad nauseum. Where's the beautiful music that was also featured in the 60's? KBEST is tired. Change to Q or something! KBEST (no reason was given) Oldies 94.9 -- I rest my case. 95.7 I vote for the Mix, 95.7. The music is wimpy, and the station is boring. McMix (no reason given) Mucks because the format is irrevelant to today's San Diego's tastes 95.7 gave away electricity, but that's not a good enough reason for it not to be voted off! Mix because the "radio" people won't get Dr. Demento on its station. 97.3 KSON (and I did vote twice the other week) -- When that's gone, then I'll vote for 99.3 because I hate country music! I spell boot-off KSON. 102.1 Sets FM because they play too many slow rock bands. (first vote for this station) 103.7 KPLN (no reason was given) Planet stinks -- we need a dance format instead of old rock music Planet from another planet isn't fit for THIS planet. After nine weeks, sometimes knocking more than two stations off a week, here is what the final skyline of the San Diego Radio Station Island looks like:
And that is all for San Diego Radio Station Survivor. I was thinking about doing the same for Los Angeles Radio Station Survivor, but I'll let Don Barrett of laradio.com do it himself. I quit! Rich Hatch Wins 'Survivor' Contest Aug 23, 2000Well, it was the most anticipated August finale since The Fugitive.OK, we're not the first news website to report this news, but so what? Richard Hatch, the ruthless strategist on CBS' ''Survivor,'' proved his mettle Wednesday night by wangling the million-dollar prize. Wasn't Richard Hatch that space soldier on "Battlestar Galactica" or something? During the two-hour finale, Hatch edged out three rival castaways on the tropical island that served as the setting for the game-show hit that became a pop-culture phenomenon. Outlasting Susan Hawk, Rudy Boesch and Kelly Wiglesworth, Hatch became the sole survivor from the 16 who marooned themselves on remote Pulau Tiga at the series' launch in May. The final choice -- between Hatch and Wiglesworth -- was handed down by a jury of seven former tribe-mates. Their vote was a squeaker: 4 to 3. ''Survivor'' host Jeff Probst called out his name. There was a sprinkling of applause from the group and Rich looked stunned. With the castaways originally divided into two tribes, one of them, ''Pagong,'' faced a tactical buzzsaw from the other, ''Tagi.'' The final four contenders all were part of that ''Tagi'' alliance, which was left to consume itself. Rich emerged from the rubble with $1 million in cash and a new car. (As runner-up, Kelly wins $100,000.) When ''Survivor'' premiered three months ago, critics called it ''Gilligan's Island'' meets ''Lord of the Flies.'' But the TV show more directly comparable was ''Dallas.'' Since that drama's ''Who Shot J.R.?'' stunt in 1980, nothing on television had gripped the nation in quite the same way -- until ''Survivor.'' An audience that experts said might reach 40 million viewers awaited the final resolution. Fans threw ''Survivor'' viewing parties, complete with tropical costumes and the ever-present threat of getting voted out of the bash. A half-hour into the show, Susan, the trucker from Palmyra, Wis., was sacked in a tribal vote. River guide Kelly had won immunity from that vote after correctly answering the most questions about former castaways. She also won a second immunity challenge by standing the longest with one hand touching the immunity idol. Her rival in that contest, Rudy, dropped out after 4 hours, 11 minutes. Then, in the second tribal council, Kelly was placed in the odd position of single-handedly deciding the fates of Richard and Rudy. She voted against Rudy, the retired Navy SEAL from Virginia Beach, Va. ''Survivor'' buzz, predictions and, most of all, hype reached epic proportions. Jumping on the reality-TV bandwagon, CBS launched the 13-week ''Survivor'' on May 31 to breathe life into a prime-time schedule largely filled with reruns. The show had been taped during 39 days last spring. On opening night, the 16 volunteers were seen arriving on the tiny tropical isle. By the end of the hour -- actually three days later -- the first among them was voted off the island during a solemn tribal council. All summer, CBS beat the ''Survivor'' drum, from morning (on its ''Early Show,'' where weekly castoffs were showcased) to night (on Wednesday, ''Late Show'' host David Letterman welcomed the castaways to recite the Top 10 list -- ''Things I Learned on the 'Survivor' Island''). Letterman had made fun of Hatch, who liked to roam the island in the buff, as ''the naked fat guy.'' Hatch, who appeared trim and clean-shaven on a live broadcast after the show Wednesday, said he had lost 34 pounds on the island and 100 pounds before he got there. The first ''Survivor'' episode drew a healthy 15.5 million viewers, but by mid-August, that number had nearly doubled. The final "Survivor" netted a whopping 51.7 million viewers, with a 28.6 rating and 45 share of those watching TV during the period. It was far from the 60.2 rating and 77 share for TV's all-time leader, the ''M A S H'' finale in 1983. It was probably the most-viewed Wednesday at 8pm show since....um....it's a tossup between Sonny and Cher vs. Tom and Abby's wedding on Eight is Enough. Is 'Survivor' a Dying Species? http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,38380,00.html?tw=wn20000824 - The finale of the first season of 'Survivor' may be the peak of 'Reality TV,' as the genre immediately hits a ratings decline, some experts say. Of course, wait 'til they send a winner into space. By Michelle Delio. |
