Do I smell a McDonald's defense if MTV's lawyers sue them for using the "M", which they will defend as an intellectial property of MTV?
Studio M hopes it can attract viewers seeking personality-based programs and a wider scope than offerings from Viacom's MTV, VH1 and M2. The long-term goal is to expand to 24-hour operation and reach 90 percent of the United States.
The network, which staged a soft launch on Dec. 11, operates a studio in Sherman Oaks, Calif. and in Newark, N.J., home of a 25,000-title library licensed from Power Play Music Video TV Corp. It has been picked up by eight full-power stations and over 130 affiliates of America One and American Independent Network.
Its initial offering is a four-hour Monday-Saturday block with veejay-hosted showcases that include ``Studio M Country,'' ''Studio M Hitz,'' ``Studio M Countdown'' and ``Studio M Urban Jams'' along with ``Club Groove,'' ``Jazz & Blues,'' ``Xtreme Music'' and ''Artist Spotlight.''
The block, which will launch at 9 p.m. PST, will feature original programming including ``Pillow Talk,'' a talk show hosted by Kathleen McClellan; ``Live Wire,'' a request and dedication program hosted by Jim Lee and Shabazze; and ``Wrestle Rock,'' blending wrestling with rock 'n' roll.
Studio M chairman-CEO Max Keller said the network, backed by French media giant Thomson Multimedia and Internet Service Provider PSINet, has been in talks for carriage with Adelphia, DirecTV, Comcast, Time Warner and EchoStar on the domestic side and with partners in India, the Middle East, Japan, North Africa and Turkey.
Keller's wife, Michelline Keller, serves as vice chairman. The pair's credits include ``Kent State,'' ``Conspiracy: The Trial of the Chicago 8,'' ``Acapulco H.E.A.T.'' and ``Tarzan.'' Company president is Michael Lloyd, who has produced such acts as Dionne Warwick, Lou Rawls and Belinda Carlisle.

KIEV will enter the new millennium with new call letters reflecting the station's recently transformed image.
Effective Monday, January 1, 2001, KIEV will officially be known as News Talk 870, The New KRLA, Your Legendary Talk Station.
"KRLA is one of the most recognizable radio brands in the Los Angeles market," stated KRLA gm Dave Armstrong. "When these legendary call letters became available, we couldn't see them going outside of Los Angeles. It seemed the right time to make an effective change." There will be no on-air changes.

Madness Network - Terrible NEws
Greetings to you all.... Well, I know it's been far too long since I've posted here, but I have some unfortunate news to share. I was very torn about the best way to announce this, but I figured this forum would cover pretty much all the important folks, and I could get away with only explaining it once. It seems as though the Madness Network will be going off the air. I have no idea for how long, or really even why. I just got the schedule for next year from Northwestern University, and I'm not on it. I am presuming at this point that it's because enough students finally signed up that there was no room left on the schedule for alumni...something I've always known was a possibility. I have a call out to our programming director, but he's out for the Christmas Break and hasn't gotten back to me yet. This news is coming at sort of a bad time, too...I found this out the same week that I was told I'd be laid off from my day job sometime in January...needless to say, it's been a rough Christmas. And this leads me into my next request...I know that quite a few fans of my show, not to mention regular guests, have offered to bombard the station with email, letters and phone calls on my behalf. Since I really don't know where my life situation is headed right now, and I haven't gotten a chance yet to speak with the director, I ask that everyone HOLD OFF on this, until such a time as I can get things figured out. This could even be a simple mistake. And even if it's not, I've had a wonderful time with the show, and it's really grown into something much bigger than I'd ever imagined it could be. Thank you ALL, for supporting me, sending me materials, communicating with me, and sending in constructive criticism. I really couldn't have done it without you all. At any rate, I'll be sure to keep you guys updated, once I find out more details. I don't know if I'll have another show or two left or not, but I'll do my damnedest. Thanks again... --Loopy "The Crown Princess of Comedy Music" --Throwing Toasters |
Reply From Keith Rose:
As an avid listener of The Madness Network (as well as having the fortune to meet Loopy in person and be in-studio with her), the news that The Madness Network is off the air saddens me. I know many people will miss not hearing the late Friday night dementia broadcasts as I will. My best wishes go out to Loopy in what has been a rough road for her as of late. We hope you can get back to a state of "normality (a term I use quite loosly)" and make a speedy return to the airwaves.
Seeing this news just got me thinking about stuff.... please bare with me if the following seems like meandering waffle...
it seems that in the last year comedy shows have been departing from the airwaves left and right; First Nummy Muffin Cocoa Butter, then The All You Can Eat Buffet of Musical Madness, now The Madness Network. Hopefully Loopy will get back on the air soon and keep the madness flowing into our speakers. If you cater to a comedy show that's still going and love what you hear, tell the station! Positive listener feedback makes station staff people feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :-)
You know what I think needs to be done in general? Get More Dementia Shows On The Air! Anyone in here that has ties to a college station (or any other station that would be open to a comedy show), use them and try to get some airtime for dementia. It took me a year of co-hosting a traditional blues show (which is one of my of my top music genres) at WLFM for me to be able to get the station staff's attention and to let them say "We liked what you did last year, so we're giving you your own show show of whatever format you want." If you have the connections that could get you a dementia show, exploit the connections and spread dementia across the airwaves. (especially if you're in an area that void of the good Doctor)
And on that note, good night all!
Keep that dementia flowing,
Keith Rose aka Keeter Man

Who knows. One thing for sure, there won't be any Y2K bugs this time around!
Anyway, here are some reports I did at the beginning of the year 2000...
As 2000 gives way to the year 2001, the Eastern-most time zone will be going to the next real millenium first, then time zones West of that will be going to 2001, one by one, one year at a time, until it cycles back to the International Date Line where 2001 started and the last time zone having 2000, the second millenium, and the 20th century, bites the dust.

And for the record: The mytical El Zona de los Misterio region sits on top of the Western time zone, but half the time zone is in the Mountain time zone! In any case, the year 2005 arrives there on March 15th when the mega holidays are just beginning, celebrating the equinox during the Equimass holiday season.
You wouldn't believe some of them. I received an e-mail from XOOM and the date was dated Jan 02, 100. 100?
When I was using my WS-FTP program to upload the files, sure enough, the date display read 1000103 instead of 000103.
So what should we call the 00's...the hundreds? Sounds better than calling them the naughts or double-ohs or whatever else.
On the insidetheweb.com messageboard, I came across a date 01-Jan-100 as the date it came to the postings.
Other glitches I came across include e-mail dated 1910 or 1969, a USENET posting dated 1980, and in a bizarre twist to the problem, Vice President Al Gore encountered the Y2K bug on his own website!
The computer glitch took a tiny bite out of Gore's campaign Web site. The damage came inside his "virtual town hall," where a message from a supporter was dated January 3, 19100.
When 1999 became 2000, some computers decided that the year following 19-99 is 19-100.
Gore's campaign explained that the mistake was visible only on computers using a certain type of browser and that it was quickly fixed. Besides, they said, it wasn't exactly a major glitch, even for the man who once claimed to have invented the Internet.
"Maybe a few people saw an error. Most people didn't. It's extremely minor," said Gore spokeswoman Kathleen Begala. "Be that as it may, we want to have every person dialing up The Al Gore 2000 Website to get the perfect Web site. And now they will."
Other yearly glitches include Windows 3.1's File Manager where if you update the files in the year 2000, the two-digit date reads ":0". The reason is technical, but the decades digit slot goes in the sequence of "89:;<=>?@A"
One last glitch...when the year rolled over from 99 to 00, so did the amount of people who listen to Todd Kelly's night show on KGB!
The New Year's Eve finale that lit the sign with neon-colored strobe lights was "ridiculous," the NBC "Tonight Show" host said during Monday's show.
"What did we have?" Leno asked the audience. "Ten floodlights from Home Depot (laughter!) I've seen bug zappers do better shows."
Leno gave a parody re-creation by training two flashlights on a small model of the sign.
"Los Angeles blows!" is how KROQ's Kevin & Bean described the celebration. "We're the entertainment capital of the world. This is where the music industry, television industry and movies are based. And what did we come up with? Lights on the Hollywood sign. We watched Rio with three million people on the beach. London had the most incredible fire works show I've ever seen and the Eiffel Tower in Paris was spectacular," Kevin said. "We light up a cheesy sign."
Which leads me to a brand new product that I've come up with...
Sales Pitch: New Years Eve Party Hollywood Style Home Version
Yes, now you and your friends can celebrate how Hollywood, California celebrates the new year in your very own home regardless of where you live.
The "New Years Eve Party Hollywood Style Home Version" comes complete with a replica of a Hollywood sign with dancing lights, three colorful flashlights colored red, green, and blue that you carry, and a cheesy built-in Auld Lang Syne theme song into the sign.
Here's how it works...you have your New Years Eve party as usual, you have the Hollywood sign on a prominent location, and three partiers are selected to pick a colored flashlight. Then, coming close to a minute before the new year, people get into position. The countdown starts 5-4-3-2-1...and once it's the new year, the partiers flash the lights on the Hollywood sign and pan the reflection on the sign back and forth while the computer plays Auld Lang Syne.
Now, isn't that amazing?
Yes, it's the party highlight to end all New Years Eve parties! It's the "New Years Eve Party Hollywood Style Home Version" by Crapco. Here's how to order:

The second week of 2000 had 01.10.00 (00.01.10) followed by 01.11.00 (00.01.11).
In October 2000, you had 10.01.00, 10.10.00, and 10.11.00; the following month, enjoy 11.01.00, 11.10.00, and 11.11.00
This year also has a bunch of binary dates: 01.01.01, 01.10.01, 01.11.01, 10.01.01, 10.10.01, 10.11.01, 11.01.01, 11.10.01, 11.11.01.
The years 2010 and 2011 round out the binary dates:
01.01.10, 01.10.10, 01.11.10, 10.01.10, 10.10.10, 10.11.10, 11.01.10, 11.10.10, 11.11.10, 01.01.11, 01.10.11, 01.11.11, 10.01.11, 10.10.11, 10.11.11, 11.01.11, 11.10.11, 11.11.11.
And for the final binary treatment, the last day of the hundreds, 12.31.99, may be written in binary like this: 1100.11111.1100011!
And by Baha Men: "Who Let The New Year Out!"
And by Campaign 2000: "We're Finally History!"
