Dave's Vernalmas 2004 Adventure in El Zona de los Misterio

Day 5: New Year's Eve (March 23, 2004 Gregorian date, Blue 30, 2007 Milleian date).

It's a very cold New Year's Eve, and once again, I have to explain that the region of El Zona is divided into two time zones. The year 2008 comes east of the state-127 freeway boundary, where points such as El Zono Loco, Cakeside, and Weird Al-pine ring in the new year one hour before the rest of the El Zona region such as San Rubio, Mira Mira, and Carlsnogood, does likewise. The Eastern part is on Mountain West Time, the Western part is on Specific Time. Then, there's Mountain Time, which is where Mountain West spun-off from, but Mountain West changes their clocks forward on the first Sunday in March instead of April, and back on the first Sunday in November. During the summer, their clocks are ahead again from the last Sunday in May to the first Sunday in September, so they're two hours ahead of the Arid Zona state just to the east! Very weird. Pacific and Mountain Times follow the normal daylight saving time pattern. Arid Zona does not observe daylight time.

On this day, more bombing of decoy signals, deaths, accidents, showfalls, shortages, and other problems compound the El Zona region. Meanwhile, the only one celebrating the new year is Mikkos and his family, who's hosting a New Years Eve party inside his secret headquarters nobody has located yet. In a toast once 12:00am struck (whichever time zone he's on), he says to his brothers and his wife "Here's to a great 2008 for the Disneycox Family. May we all be richer beyond our wildest dreams as we control the State of America, and soon after, the world." The family clinks their champagne drinks together in celebration of the new year and in anticipation that they will benefit richly from ownership of the cable companies, which they plan to raise to $40 a month for just the basic 27 channel service, and $100 a month if they want ESPN, CNN, and other popular cable channels. Needless to mention, the $5 a gallon gasoline will become a reality in El Zona, maybe in San Diego for real without Mikkos acting, food will cost more, natural gas and electricity will cost more, thanks to his plans for Mikkos and the Disneycox clan to raise the costs at will and require everybody in the region to subscribe to cable whether they want it or not.

The New Years Eve celebrations were muted at best, with almost nobody in the region wanting to bear the sub-freezing temperatures to ring in the new year. Many people just rang in the new year by dropping a snowball from a 40-story building timed to splat when 2008 rolled into the Eastern half one hour, and an hour later, the Western half of El Zona.

What a mess. Well, at least Mikkos has kept the temperature at five degrees below zero for a few days.
