But I do ask: why? What's the big deal with emphaszing scare and horror? Why is there a need to keep on pressing all the gore, the scare, the frights, and the violence associated with Halloween? Frankly, I'm totally appalled at the way the holiday has morphed into.
What happened to emphaszing the fun part of Halloween without resorting to PG-13 rated images and traditions? I would never ever take my kids (if I had any) to a haunted anything until they are at least 13 years of age. Scaring kids is not fun and I do not approve of any responsible adult using the holiday as an excuse to cause irrepariable emotional trauma with scary stuff.
Here's how I would correct the holiday: first off, keep the frightening stuff away from young children, that means no body parts, wielding axes, blood stained anything, violence, beheading, stabbbing, all that stuff found on any horror movie you can name.
Second, remember that religious symbols are banned from our public schools. So why are the symbols of the wiccan cult such as images of witches present if I can't vouch for my support to place images of Jesus Christ in our public schools? If I can't have the symbol of Christmas at my school, nobody should have theirs either.
Third, trick or treating should be done before dark. Extend daylight saving time until 2am November 1st no matter what day it falls on! No young children out after 8pm, no exceptions. Kids should be in bed at that time anyway!
Fourth, it is not necessary to emphasize scary costumes as they frighten the young ones. If you're going to be around the kids, consider wearing costumes that are far less traumatizing such as cartoon characters from Nick Toons, jobs such as firemen and policeman, the American eagle, go out as all five members of N Sync, even Barney the Dinosaur. Choose Biblical characters, a character from The Brady Bunch, whatever. Make it a fun one.
One note to the men going out as ballerinas or Britney Spears or Marilyn Monroe: make sure you're wearing trousers underneath! Obscene exposure could land you in jail!
Halloween can be a great holiday if you keep in mind the young children, who are just thinking of having fun and being scared to death is the last thing on their minds.
Personally, I'm not sure what the teachings of many religious books say on how to go about recognizing the holiday. I, as a Catholic, choose not to participate in the holiday as it is not meant for me anyway.
"REWARDING GRADITUDE - Our church hosts a Harvest Festival each year on October 31. This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to dress up in costumes and get candy without (celebratingö Halloween. The first year, my kids got to keep only half of the candy they received. They kept forgetting to say, (Thank you,ö when the candy was passed out at the various game booths. Our family rule is that if you forget to be grateful, you must give the candy to Mom and Dad."
**CANCEL HALLOWEEN? Time to rethink this annual celebration of death!! Weİve had enough graveyard stuff this year. What the heck have we been doing all these years anyway? Making cute of blood and gore and death. Canİt really cancel Halloween because it is now ingrained in our culture (and has become a major economic event for retailers) but we can change the tenorawe can call it Candy Night, Costume Night, Visit Your Neighbors Night, Kids Night Outait can still be fun and fattening. Two ponders: 1) Why did we ever celebrate death? 2) We actually go and knock on our neighbors doors and say Hi and get candyaand we open our doors to our neighborsaletİs keep that latter part okay?
