What's My Beef!

Alright. Who are the engineers that are responsible for the poor design of the San Diego freeway system?

Who would have known four decades ago that housing prices in San Diego would go through the roof while cheaper housing is within an hour's reach at freeway speed in nearby Temecula sitting between San Diego, Riverside, Orange, and Palm Springs, the sweetest spot in the Southern California Outland.

Problem: who was the wise guy that designed the freeways so that if you just want to get to the local cities up north such as San Marcos, Fallbrook, Poway, and Escondido, you have to take the sole freeway that leads to those cities at the same time as the other commuters are taking the freeway to Temecula! No wonder the traffic is gridlocked!

It's time we took control of our roads and get our hands dirty! Build some local loop freeways for the locals to get from the southern part to the northern part of the county! Extend 163 from the Miramar Marine Corp Air Station up through the east side of Poway and have it meet highway 56, which would go all the way from Del Mar to intersect with a freewayized highway 67. Also, highway 125, for the locals in the East County, would be extended all the way to Pala where it meets with a freewayized highway 76. Also, highway 78 from Escondido to Ramona gets freewayized.

More parallel freeways to Interstates 5 and 15 are sorely needed and now! Let's extend Interstate 805 from Mira Mesa to have it meet I-5 north of Oceanside! As for Del Mar wanting to maintan a two-lane highway 101, to heck with them! Recommission U.S. Highway 101, make it a freeway, and have it go from Oceanside down through La Jolla, where it meets highway 52, extended and freewayized, and 101 continues down through the beaches and into downtown!

Highway 274? Make it a freeway too! Extend it through Terrasanta, in fact, extend Claremont Mesa to meet Jackson Drive, extended from Mission Gorge to 52! 274 extends into San Carlos where it meets 125.

Build a new parallel freeway to the west of 15, call it 11, extend it through San Marcos and through Fallbrook and up northwards into Orange county and towards Los Angeles. Build a highway 9 from Carlsbad northeastwards through Temecula and into Palm Springs. Build a highway 2 from San Ysidro through Campo and have it meet highway 8. Turn Friars and Mission Gorge into highway 808 parallel to 8 and have it go from the beaches and have it meet 8 just east of Lakeside.

Whose idea was to have 54 curve upwards? Have 54 continue east after crossing 94, and into the eastern areas of the county where new houses and communities could be built around the freeway. 54 continues on east into Alpine. Rename the 54 that goes northwards as 67 going from highway 2 near Campo through El Cajon and into Lakeside. Rename the 67 freeway as 267, spurring into downtown El Cajon, and continuing southwards and have it meet 94.

Would houses and businesses have to be moved? Yes. As people move out of the nearby houses, have the current residences relocate to the vacated homes nearby and have the state pick up the full tab. As people move out of the proposed line of the future freeways, move the houses themselves off the properties to new locations. Put the prisioners to work and have them help Caltrans flatten the lands and move the stuff out of the way.

Time to get the gridlocks cleared out. Let's get those roads built!
