About the rtdb ProjectWelcome to the radio/tv database project, or the rtdb. The mission is to create a database of all of the radio and TV stations in the Southern California area and surrounding areas. The main areas covered are the areas of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernadino, Riverside, Orange, and Tijuana. The surrounding areas that are of interest include Imperial Valley, Coachella, Lancaster, Palmdale, Barstow, Apple Valley, Bakersfield, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Santa Maria, and Ensenada. The original database of the Southern California radio stations first went online in 1995 and was retired in 2004 because as time went on, there were numerous improvements that needed to be addressed such as the rise of digital television and radio as well as multicasting, and the need to provide a more rounded history of the stations being covered in the area. After several unsuccessful tries, we decided to reformat the whole database that we used and put an end to the confusing hierarchy that we used in the old version of the Radio/TV Data page. We've gotten several hundred e-mail feedback for suggestions, many wanting to provide a better way to organize the pages, plus to bring back the old Radio History pages that were taken offline a few years ago. This took two years of writing computer code, thanks to the use of the PowerBasic Console Compiler, available at http://www.powerbasic.com/ to give a free plug, it's worth about $200 and well spent, works better than QBASIC that's outdated. With QBASIC, we couldn't do the things we wanted to do such as sorting data in memory in a quick fashion, using 32-bit addressing, have the use of megabytes of memory for use (instead of just 64K used way back in the 80s), and other neat functions that we used in the PowerBasic version of the program that uses a totally reformatted database to create our website with. All of the pages except for the Hand-Made History pages are generated from a single radio/tv database stored offline. The PowerBasic program we wrote read the database, as well as the 0300.htm file used for a template, to create several pages of the historys of the radio market skylines since 1922, the history of an individual radio station by frequency and zone, and pages linking them and the Hand Made histories all together. This took a lot of work but it's paid off. We put the feedback form right on the front page of the rtdb section for easy access. That way, when you want to add something to the database, you can just fill out what you know and send them in. This is a work in progress and is by no means complete. This may include some outdated or incorrect information from place to place, so please be strongly encouraged to fix some facts and set them straight. We divided the rtdb Section into several subjects and subpages. The subjects include groupings of radio stations by parts of state, and the pages are the areas related to the subjects. For example, if you want the radio stations from San Diego, just click on the CA-S subject, then select the San Diego page. The CA-S is for California-Southern. Other subjects are being worked on. In the future, we hope to include radio stations from more areas such as Arizona, Nevada, Sonora, California-Central, California-North, and other outlying areas. So far, as of August 2007, we haven't coded a way to print the details of the radio stations yet such as websites, addresses, phone numbers, antenna locations, power, and other note, but we're working on that and will be available in the future. Welcome to the rtdb. Make it yours and contribute some history and information. |
